12 Thursday, November 13, 1986 / University Daily Kansan Ziegler Continued from p.9 it on the scoreboard, that was the clincher." Football hasn't always been fun and games for Ziegler, who at one time considered quitting the team. He has battled injuries throughout college. The most serious were knee injuries in 1982, 1983 and 1985, which kept him out of several games. "When it first happened, it was hard. I almost quit," he said. "I decided to stick it out. I thought there were things I could accomplish. "This last year wasn't that hard for me, my position coach, Vince Hoch, who's at Mississippi State now, helped me a lot as far as keeping my spirits up and reassuring me I could have a good year despite my injuries." Last season, Ziegler missed seven games because of a knee injury. Still, he collected 21 tackles and intercepted a pass against Kansas State for a 31-yard touchdown He emerged as a leader of Kansas' defensive secondary in 1984. Ziegler ranked third overall and first among defensive backs with 92 tackles. He led the squad and ranked third in the conference and 20th in the country with five interceptions. he played his most memorable game that season when he intercepted a pass against Oklahoma and returned it 63 yards for a touchdown in the Jayhawks' 28-11 upset of the Sooners. "It was my best experience, not only because we beat them, but because I was able to contribute," he said. Although with 75 tackles, he is second on the team, this season has been a disappointment to him, especially since it's his last one at Kansas. "The biggest thing that I wanted to do and I thought we could last year, was to go to a game bowl." Ziegler said. "I think if we could have done that, it would have capped off a good year." Ziegler is not sure what the future holds for him, although coaching is a possibility. Professional football is far down on the list. "With pro ball you never know if you're going to get the opportunity," he said. "It's not something I'm banking on or planning for. It's a very big if. I really think I could be a good coach. I couldn't work in an office, though. That would drive me crazy. I like to be outside." He has been offered graduate assistant posts at both Kansas and Mississippi State, but still hasn't made up his mind where to go "I'm going to be sorry to see him graduate," head coach Bob Valesente said. "Hopefully we can recruit an awful lot of Wayne Zieglers over the next 100 years." Women's cross country The women will be in Peoria, Ill., Saturday to run in the National College Athletic Association Region V Championships hosted by Bradley University. The top three teams will go to the national championships Nov. 24 in Tucson, Ariz. There are eight regions in the country. Head coach Cliff Rovello said yesterday that about 30 schools from the Midwest would be represented Saturday. Rovello said that it was conceivable that a fourth team could go to nationals by way of an large bid. Also, the top two runners Saturday who are not members of the qualifying teams will be eligible for the national championships. All of the Big Eight Conference teams, with the exception of Oklahoma, will be in Peoria. Gateway Conference teams and several independents also will compete. Rovello said he expected Saturday's results to be similar to the Big Eight Championships Nov. 2 in Manhattan. There, the Jayhawks "We'll be as good as any team there outside of the Big Eight teams," he said. "The workouts this week have been good." finished last out of seven teams. The Jayhawks, Rovelto said, should be able to place higher than the smaller schools at the meet. Freshman Kelly Coffey agreed with her coach. "We should be in front of a lot of teams." Coffey said yesterday. "We'll probably finish in the middle." The recent cold weather shouldn't be a problem because most of the runners weren't from warm climates, Roveto said. Sophome Melissa Satterfield field the farthest south, in Fort Smith, Ark. "Once you get started running, it (the cold) doesn't bother you too much." Coffey said. "Warming up can be hard and it's easy to pull a muscle, though." For the most part, the Jayhawks will be healthy going into Saturday's meet. Although Lisa Kirwan, one of KU's top runners, never found out what caused the pain in her left leg, Roveltal said she had a good week of workouts. This week, Kirwan experienced a little of the pain which kept her out of competition earlier this year. Rovello said he planned to take Michelle Forode, Jodie McDonald, Trish Mangan, Coffey, Kirwan and Satterfield to Peoria.
