7 Pets unleash bacteria on faithful masters BY COLLEEN SIEBES Pet owners who bring their animals inside for the winter could be unleashing a number of pet-associated illnesses on humans, a professor at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Mo., said yesterday. Donald Milligan, assistant professor of family practice, said pet owners should be especially cautious of pet-associated illnesses during winter months when animals spent a lot of time indoors. Milligan said pets carried a large number of infections such as cat-scratch fever, allergies and poison ivy. Milligan said that severe illnesses were unusual but that dogs and cats carried bacteria that could cause problems, particularly for children and pregnant women. Cat-c scratch fever is a bacterial disease transmitted to humans through cat scratches. Generally, the lymph nodes around the scratched area will swell and fill with pus, Milligan said. One in 20 people in the United States, or 5 percent of the population, has at one time contracted cat scratch fever, Milligan said. Occasionally, those affected will develop feveres and rashes in rare situations, bone infections and neurological problems. Milligan said pregnant women should be particularly careful because some diseases transmitted from pets can affect unborn babies. Milligan said pet owners could avoid some diseases by making sure their animals were immunized and being careful when handling litter boxes. After cleaning litter boxes, owners should wash their hands carefully to avoid bringing parasites and eggs into the mouth, Milligan said. For example, people who contract toxoplasmosis, a disease transmitted through feces, commonly develop swollen lymph glands and fevers The Student Union Activities Champion's Club will meet at 7 p.m. today in the Trail Room of the Kansas Union.
