6 Thursday, November 13, 1986 / University Daily Kansan KU engineers to go to Technologyfest By PAMELA SPINGLER Staff writer About 15 KU aerospace engineering students will join professionals nationwide in Wichita this weekend for the 13th annual American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Technologytest. The conference will feature professional engineers, who will discuss advances in six sub-sections of aerospace engineering, including jet propulsion, National Aeronautics and Space Administration research updates and engineering education. Tom Aniello, Champaign, Ill., senior and president of the KU chapter of the AIAA, said that since Wichita was the aviation capital of the United States, students were excited about seeing the new projects the industry was working on. "Even though Wichita has fallen on hard times recently, they are still working on some exciting new projects," he said. "It also gives the students the opportunity to meet industry professionals and to get contacts, which is important these days." Paul Lane, San Diego senior and secretary of the KU chapter of the AIAA, said most KU students enjoyed attending the conference because of the interaction with people working in aerospace engineering. "You learn so much about airplanes," he said. "And it's a nice chance to get a look at what we'll be doing for the rest of our lives." Mahyar Rahbarrad, Olathe sophomore, said he was going to the conference to see the newest research. "It's the students' responsibility to know what is going on in the field, so you just haven't learned old technology, but also the newest," he said. the conference's dinner speaker will be Paul Garber, historian emeritus and Ramsey Fellow of the Smithsonian Institute's National Air and Space Museum in Washington.
