Allen Wiechert, the director, said the smokestack, which is behind Staufer-Flint Hall, could be torn down in April or sooner. "It all depends on the heating need," he said. The smokestack has been operating at the University since 1921 and is used to discharge residue from the burning oil or natural gas fuel used to create steam in the power plant's boilers.
