Panelists sav planning needed to fight hunger

Grass roots long-term planning by developed and underdeveloped countries is essential to combat world hunger, four panelists said in Lawrence from Washington DC.
"Hunger Amidst Plenty: Policy and Practice" was the theme of the third annual World Food Day teleconference, which was broadcast on CBS and sponsored by Catholic Campus Center, 1631 Crescent Rd.
"We must formulate a long-term policy to allow for greater food productivity in the poorest countries, but we must also care for world hunger that exists today," said Barber
The other panel members were Muhammad Yunus, founder and managing director of the Gameen Bank in Dhaka, Bangladesh; Patricia Barnes-McConnell, director of the Michigan State University Bean/Cowpea Collaborative Research Support Program; and Cecilia Lopez, Colombia's ambassador to the Netherlands.

"It's a paradox that the poorest countries rely on subsistence agriculture, while many U.S. farmers have grain surpluses that command low prices and often don't reach the poorest countries." Conable said.

Canable said that the World Bank must work with public agencies and volunteer groups to increase the quality of life in developing countries.
He also said that developed countries must help underdeveloped countries finance health services, roads and education, which are needed for economic self-sufficiency.
McConnell said developed countries also must direct their resources in developing countries to small-scale farmers, who are capable of local climate and soil conditions.
Yumus said international institutions such as bank and agencies rejected too slowly to keep the system running.
"We need to find new institutions that will be effective," he said. "Social change is slow in the developed countries, but it is more rapid in developing countries."
Yunus' bank offers small loans, averaging $60, to the rural poor in Bangladesh to reduce hunger and to stimulate small-scale agriculture.
