10 Monday, October 13, 1986 / University Daily Kansan Men's soccer club suffers tough loss By ANNE LUSCOMBE Sports write. The Kansas men's soccer club came home this weekend disappointed at the results of the Ed Charttrand Memorial Tournament in Kansas City, Mo. The difference of opinions on two calls during the tournament's second game and a tight schedule dropped the team from a promising tournament victory to a tough loss. Kansas came out strong in the first game, trouncing Central Missouri State 5-0. Nikos Mills, Tom McKay, who had two goals, Lawrence Thomas and Tom Holland scored for Kansas. The second game ended in a 1-1 tie with Oklahoma State that was especially hard for Mills and the rest of the team to accept. Because one referee did not show up for the game, the calls rested on decisions of just two referees. One referee called interference on Mills when it was actually the goal keeper who had interfered, coach Glen Shirtliffe said yesterday. "The referee said Nick (Mills) pushed the goal keeper down, but actually the opposite was true.” Shirtliff said. “It was a terrible call and we were all in total disbelief. However, you have to live by the rules and accept what the referees say.” The team only had five minutes to and before taking on Iowa State. Iowa State quickly scored twice in the first half. After the halftime rest, Kansas returned to score once with a Mills goal, but it wasn't enough to win. KU lost 2-1. "Nick played very well. He was always threatening," Shirtlife said. "He scored in every game, if you count the one he had taken away from him." the championship, which ended yesterday, went to the University of Missouri-Kansas City. That only added to Kansas' disappointment, Shirtliffe said, because his team knew it could have beaten UMKC. Shirtliffe said the whole team played amazingly well, especially against Oklahoma State. "We still have our best game left inside us," Shirliffe said. "We proved we were one of the best teams there. I'm not at all disappointed; I'm proud of the way they played."
