6B • THE UNIVERSITY DAJLY KANSAN THE UNIVERSITY DAILY WOMEN'S BASKETBALL MONDAY, DECEMBER 9. 2002 Brandon Baker/Kansan Tamara Ransburg, freshman forward, reaches to block the shot of Jessica Cook, Western Illinois guard, during the final game of the Holiday inn Jayhawk Classic Tournament. Ransburg blocked six shots against Western Illinois. Split weekend CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1B lead. It was Burras who led the Jayhawks back. In the final 1:44 of the first half, Burras had a three pointer, a blocked shot and two steals that put Kansas ahead 30-24 at the break. "This club has got to learn to come out and put back-to-back games together." Washington said after the game. "It was pretty obvious that we did not come out with the same intensity that we had in the first game." Washington was not happy with the effort, but the Jayhawks were in the game until the end. They never trailed by more than five points in the second half, and had an opportunity to tie the game when they missed two shots in with less than 30 seconds left to play. In the end, Kansas couldn't overcome a 54.5 percent free throw percentage and 15 second half turnovers — two more than they committed in the entire Texas Southern game. Despite the loss, the Jayhawks separated themselves from last year's 5-25 team. Burras said "Nobody wanted to shoot. Nobody wanted to take over." she said of last season's squad. "Us at the freshman and sophomore level, we want to attack. We want to take over." - Edited by Jessica Hood Freshmen CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1B In two games, Ransburg pulled down 22 rebounds and blocked 10 shots, earning her a spot on the all-tournament team. While Hallman and Burras worked on the perimeter, Ransburg did her job under the boards, blocking shots and grabbing rebounds. "Tamara's quite an athlete. I think she can get double-doubles throughout the season," coach Marian Washington said. "I just love her enthusiasm. She loves the game and plays it with a lot of passion." Despite the team's youth, they've continued to come together on the basletball court, looking more like a veteran squad as the season progresses. "I think our team chemistry is good," Hallman said. "Usually when you have seven or eight newcomers it's not going to be that great, but we spend a lot of time together off the court, which really helps us a lot." — Edited by Nicole Roché Freshman guard Erica Hallman attempts to break away from Texas Southern's Brittany Turner. Waitz scored 11 points against Western Illinois Saturday. Waltz stars in loss despite stomach virus By Ryan Greene rgreene@kansan.com Kansan sportswinter If it was not said enough prior to this weekend to convince people that sophomore Blair Waltz is a gamer, then her performance in the Holiday Inn Jayhawk Classic drove home the point. A stomach virus had plagued Waltz all week and even forced her out of Friday's first-round game at halftime. After struggling in that game against Texas Southern, Waltz came out Saturday and scored 11 points in a gutsy performance as Kansas fell to Western Illinois, 48-46. "I had trouble keeping food down all week, and it just caught up with me at the wrong time," she said. "I know that my team-mates needed me and I needed them." On Friday night, it was obvious to anyone watching the game that Waltz was not her usual self. Other than two layups on fast breaks, Waltz shot 0-for-9 from the field in 18 minutes played. Early in the second half, she left the bench for the locker room and did not reappear the rest of the night. During the post game press conference, coach Marian Washington insisted that her starting guard would be ready to go in the championship matchup. Not only was Waltz ready, but she played 33 minutes and racked up 11 points on 4-for-6 shooting as Kansas lost by two points to the Westwinders. "Blair loves the game and she told me right after the game yesterday not to worry and that she'd be out there," Washington said. "I was pleased to see her be as aggressive as she was." Waltz is hoping that the stomach virus will subside in the next couple of days so she can be at full strength for Kansas' game Wednesday at Wichita State. Waltz said she expected the entire team to bounce back emotionally from the tough defeat. "I feel bad for Wichita State having to play us after a loss," Waltz said. "We're just going to be that much more motivated."
