Collison's foul problems hampered the game plan and made him ineffective. Williams said. "That's basketball," he said. "You have to play with who you have out there on the court. You've got to be able to fight through those kind of things and step up and be a big player on big game days." Kansas' Kirk Hinrich evolved as Kansas' big player despite a nagging back problem. Hinrich helped tie the game at 74 in the middle of the second half, after leaving two separate times to rest from cramping muscles. Still, Hinrich played 39 minutes and led Kansas with 24 points. He said his team is not where it wants to be, but the kinks slowly are getting worked out. "We had the fight tonight that we didn't have in games past," he said. "This team is still trying to find itself, but we're not going to give up." KU has not started the season with a 3-3 since 1979. Williams said his senior guard gave it everything he had. "Is there a tougher guy out there? I don't think so," he said. "He's ultra-competitive." Sophomore Michael Lee played a career-high 20 minutes. He came off the bench and scored 11 points, grabbed eight rebounds and dished out two assists, while Miles struggled, hitting just one of 11 shots and turning the ball over seven times. Lee said the atmosphere in the Rose Garden — with a crowd of more than 20,000 — inspired him. "Coach just threw me out there and I just knew all I had to do was go hard and good things would happen." Lee said. "Hopefully I can build on this." Not since 1979 has Kansas started a season with a 3-3 record. Saturday's outcome was not desirable, said Williams, but he appreciated the opportunity to coach in such a hard-fought game. "It was a great college atmosphere," he said. "If you love basketball, you have to love everything that was going on out there." —Edited by Adam Pracht FAST CASH 4 YOUR STUFF!
