Libertarian opposes regulation

Libertarian candidate Jay Germano wants to get government out of his pocket and away from his body.
"I do not have control of my own body," said the candidate for the House of Representatives 44th District. "I'm not a drug user, but I do not have the right to decide what I can put in my body. This government has taken control of me."
Germano, a student teaching assistant at the University of Kansas, cites government over-regulation of people's behavior as one of the reasons he decided to run for office.

Republican prepares blueprint

Brian Kubotasays he wants to bring his vision for the 21st century to the State Legislature.
"Any answers to solve today's problems need longer-term solutions," says the Republican candidate for the House of Representative's 44th District. "In the last 10 years government spending has gone up, and the question is, 'what have we accomplished?'
Kubota, a Lawrence resident of 21 years and landscape architect, touts his plan, "A Program for Strategic Investments," as a blueprint for preparing Kansas for the next century. It calls for increased cooperation between business and government.
"What's costing us a lot of money is moving our money to the government
to solve our problems," he said. "Government has more to do than it has people for."
Business can shoulder more responsibility for solving these problems if government provides the right leadership. Kubota said.
Kubota, 49, said he wanted the state to provide tax incentives that could expand the job base and promote social goals.
For example, industries could use money saved from tax breaks to hire smaller businesses to recycle waste, he said.
Education should prepare students to compete in the 21st century's global economy, he said.
