Starting Jan. 1, individuals diagnosed with pulmonary tuberculosis, recurrent pneumonia or invasive cervical cancer will be diagnosed with AIDS if they are infected with HIV. The Centers for Disease Control yesterday proposed a new definition of AIDS that adds three diseases to the list of 23 diseases that are considered to be indicators of AIDS. The CDC considered changing the definition of AIDS after a coalition, female AIDS activists cited studies that indicated that pulmonary tuberculosis, recurrent pneumonia and invasive cervical cancer were more common and worsened in HIV-infected individuals as the virus destroyed their immune sys- About 1 million Americans are infected with HIV. Of about 230,000 individuals that have developed AIDS under the current definition, about 152,000 have died. The change in the definition will increase the number of people considered to have AIDS, but the CDC does not know by how much.
