5 --- Wednesday, September 30, 1992 13 SPORTS UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN Royals pitcher allows one hit; George Brett does not play The Associated Press ANAHEIM, Calif. — The Royals Dennis Rasmussen pitched a one-hitter against the California Angels in a 2-0 victory last night, giving him a victory over every American League team. Mike Macfarlane's lead-off homer in the fifth inning and his RBI single in the ninth was all Rasmussen (4-0) needed to remain perfect in four starts since coming up from Triple-A Omaha on Sept. 10. The left hander, in pitching his first career one-hitter, did not give up a run. He allowed only a lead-off single in the fourth by rookie Damion Easley. Rasmussen then quickly picked off Easley. Rasmussen struck out three, walked none and retired the last 17 Angels while pitching to the minimum 27. It also left Rasmussen victorious against every major-league team except the Pittsburgh Pirates. Injured Brett out again George Brett took four swings off the batting tee last night, felt a familiar pain shoot through his left shoulder and decided he had better delay for another day his pursuit of career hit No. 3,000. The Kansas City Royals designated hitter, four hits shy of becoming the 18th major league to reach 3,000, was out of the lineup for the second consecutive night when the Royals face the California Angels. Brett, bothered by strained muscles in his shoulder, will have five games — two more at Anaheim Stadium and a season-ending weekend series at Kansas City — to reach the hits plateau. "If I'm 80 percent and pain free, I'll play tomorrow." Brett said last night. He got good news earlier in the day when test results revealed no torn stem. The soreness is caused by a strain of Brett's triceps muscle where it connects to the back of the shoulder, said Royals trainer Nick Swartz. He added that there is also apparently a strain of a minor muscle in the rotator cuff area. He sat out Monday's game when tightness in the shoulder developed during batting practice. He first felt the pain on Sunday. He reiterated yesterday afternoon that he wants get his 3,000th hit but "I don't want it to come down to my last at-bat, not come down to needing four hits in three games; I want to get it done," Brett said. He added, however, that he did not want to risk trying to play too soon. Closing in on 3,000 Source: 1991 Kansas City Royals Media Guide injury rewarday, I couldn't swing," he said. "If I had tried to play, I might have been done for the rest of the season. It's not a do-or-die thing, not hitting. 400, it's not the seventh game of the World Series." Brett still is frustrated by the untimely injury. "I had a lot of friends fly in from Kansas City, my mother drove in from Palm Springs." he said. "I feel like I am lost a lot of people down, including myself." 842-6555 2429 Iowa Jarrett Small Animal Clinic 2201 J.W. 25th Street (913)749-2983 Dana-McFarlane Hospital 2201 S. 26th Street (913)749-2983 Microtech Computers Microtech Computers 2329 M Iowa Street Phone: (913) 841 9513 Lawrence, Kansas Fax: (913) 841 1809 MTech VEX 386-40MHz 80386DX-40MHz 64K Cache 80368DX-40MH2 64K Cache 2MB RAM, Exp. to 32MB 1.2MB Floppy Disk Drive 1.44MB Floppy Disk Drive 80MB Hard Disk Drive SVGA Color Monitor SVGA Video Card DOS 5.0 w/Manual 1 Year Warranty $1199^00 Options: 4MB RAM Upgrade $72$10 Windows 3.1 & Mouse $59$10 120MB Hard Drive Upgrade $87$10 A GIFT FROM CLINIQUE "Clinique Advantages," Free With Any $13.50 Clinique Purchase!
