SPORTS UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN Volleyball team prepares for K-State By David Dorsey Kansas sportswriter Kansan sportswriter The Kansas volleyball team plays Kansas State tonight in its second Big Eight Conference match this season. Kansas defeated K-State twice last year, but the Wildcats lost several seniors and have some new players on its team. "I don't really know what to expect because their team is a lot different this year," Kansas coach Frankie Albitz said. "But we're improving greatly with every match, and everyone seemed to be rested yesterday. We're looking forward to it." Julie Larkin, Wichita senior, practices her passing. The Kansas volleyball team will face Kansas State tonight in Manhattan. Kim DeHoff, senior middle blocker, said the Wildcats would be looking to beat Kansas after two consecutive losses. "They lost a lot of players last year, but they're always competitive," she In last year’s matches, Kansas beat the Wildcats at Manhattan 15-8, 15-4, and 15-5. At home, the Jayhawks at 15-8, 13-15, 17-15, 15-17 and 15-10. The match is at 7:30 tonight in Manhattan. The Jayhawks will play in the Arkansas State Tournament this weekend and do not have a home match until Oct. 7 against Nebraska. The team comes off losses to Colorado and Woming. trouble getting to the games." Kansas left Saturday night from Wyoming to return home on the team's bus. Sixteen and a half hours later on Sunday afternoon, the bus rumbled into the Allen Field House parking lot. The bus ride from Wyoming usually takes 12 hours, DeHoff said, but because of trouble with the bus's alternator the ride lasted four and a half hours longer. "It was really frustrating." she said. "I personally think it's funny now, looking back, but it would be so much easier for our team if it never had happened. We're trying to get tougher by playing better teams on the road, but it's hard to concentrate if we have Albitz said that the bus began having trouble while driving to Colorado, where the team played Friday night. "We had it fixed in Salina, and it was fine until the ride back from Wyoming," she said. "I don't think the ride had a lot to do with how we played against these teams, because everyone got a lot of rest. But it did mess with everyone's sleeping pattern Colorado was our worst match this season. Part of it is that we're playing a higher level of competition now. I upgraded our schedule this year because I think that playing against tougher opponents is the next step our program needs to take." step out program needs to take. Julie Larken, senior outside hitter, said she did not know what happened to the team. "I thought we should have won," she said. "I've had my worst road trip in four years here. But now we're thinking about K-State." Cyndee Kanabel, junior outside hitter, said the bus ride was not why the team lost to Colorado and Wyoming: "It's just no excuse to play bad," Kanabel said. "It might have had a lifelike effect on us, but we're used to traveling. I think we've put that trip behind us, and we're looking on to playing our next game." FORALIMITEDTIMEONLY!
