UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN Helicopter accident kills four over Niagara Falls The Associated Press NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. — Two helicopters captive sightseers over Niagara Falls collided yesterday, and one crash near the Niagara River gorge, killing all four people aboard, authorities said. fell, said Folemsbee, a parking lot attendant. Witnesses said debris from the helicopters rained down onto a parking lot, but no one on the ground was hurt. The collision happened shortly after noon about 300 yards from the falls, which straddle the U.S.-Canadian border. The other helicopter landed safely at a park nearby. A witness, Michael Folemsbee of Niagara Falls, said the landing gear of one helicopter shear* 0 off the tail of the helicopter that crashed. "You could hear the 'woof woof' of the rotors not being able to "turn" as it It slammed into an embankment and slid about 50 feet to the bottom, he said. The other helicopter kept going but was wobbling around, Folemsbee said. The helicopter that crashed was a Hughes 500 belonging to Rainbow Helicopters Inc. in Niagara Falls, N.Y. It carried four people, company manager Scott Hughes said. The pilot was identified as Ben Poprawski, 43, of Kendall, N.Y. The other victims — one man and two women — were not immediately identified. Authorities said they did not know how many people were aboard the other helicopter, a Jetstream HB4 owned by Navigator Hawaii Lcds. Of The pilot, Rodolfo DeCastro, sustained a shoulder injury, said a company official. Frits Wiarda, 31, a sightseer from Delft, Netherlands, said he was standing by a railing overlooking the falls when the collision occurred. The skies over the falls are often crowded with sightseeing planes and helicopters, which has raised concerns about air-traffic safety. "I looked up in the sky, and I saw one helicopter flying away and the red one tumbling down," Wiarda said. "My first reaction was, 'Do I want to make a photograph?' And then I realized I was pretty close to it, so I started running away from it. And I looked up and there was debris everywhere." "It's like Vietnam," said Kevin Meritt, who lives a half-mile from the crash site. "They're flying too many, low too, fast." Three youth found dead at Florida campus The Associated Press MIAMI—Three young people were found fatally stabbed in a car at the Florida International University campus yesterday, but officials dismissed similarities to the 1990 student slayings that rocked Gainesville. Police at state-owned FTU immediately tightened security around the sprawling campus, Kalmanson said. The victims apparently were stabbed, said Dam Kalmanson, a university representative. "The car was a sedan," he said. A yellow cord tied in what appeared to be a 6-inch hangman's noose was dangling from the rearview mirror, but police could not say who placed it there, Sgt. Pat Rickman said. "Our students are naturally concerned and worried," he said. "We feel it's an isolated incident and not similar to the serial killings that took place in Gainesville." The bodies of two unidentified men and a woman next to a lake were discovered by a campus police officer, authorities said. Unlike some of the victims in the Gainesville slayings, the bodies did not appear to have been mutilated. Kalmanson said. Mete-Dade Detective George Reyes would not confirm that the victims were stabbed to death. "We can't really tell how they died," he said. "We also don't have any information as to who they are as of yet. We don't know if they're students, if they're faculty members or just people that happened to be by here." Just after noon, a flatbed truck carried the car, with the medical examiner's office where autotransfers will be performed. The campus, about 10 miles southwest of downtown Miami, has about 17,800 students, many of whom recall the Gainesville stabbeds. Wednesdays Only! As Easy as 1,2,3!
