"After I said yes, he turned to the class and said no, he wouldn't go out with me." Continued from Page 1. Bridgid said her initial worries that she might be teased at KU had disappeared. That has not happened since she has been here. "A lot of people don't look me in the eye," she said. "I would be very surprised if someone would try to tease me here now," she said. She said she still believed that the majority of the KU population was uncomfortable with her disability. Because many structures and buildings on the KU campus are old, she said she understood they would not have the best accessibility for disabled persons. "I'll always tell you if I don't want to talk about something," she said with confidence. Bridgid said she encouraged people not to be afraid to ask questions about her disability. Bridgid had to fight back after operations on her right hip and arm, ankles, knees and legs between the ages of 2 and 11. who will complete the minimum requirements for admission by the end of the Fall Semester APPLICATIONS FOR SPRING 1993 ADMISSION TO THE SCHOOL OF BUSINESS ARE DUE THURSDAY, 1 OCTOBER IN 206 SUMMERFIELD APPLICATIONS ARE AVAILABLE IN 206 SUMMERFIELD 864-3844 "He shunned me for my cerebral palsy," she said. "To me that's not normal. I don't know of any father that would do that." "I had exercises Needed to do every day when I was younger," Bridgid said. "Dad would give me a look like I wasn't good enough." "I would have to learn to walk again after each operation on my legs," she said. "It was very painful at times." She said her stepfather would tell her that if she learned to walk right, he would buy her things as rewards. At age 11, she moved with her parents to New Zealand. Two years later, Despite the changes of scenery, Bridgid said her heart was still full of misery, and she turned to Christianity for help. she moved to Italy with them to attend high school. After more than four years of college and a lifetime of struggling with her disability, Bridgid said she was happy with her life now. PRE-BUSINESS STUDENTS She feels comfortable on the KU campus, she said, and enjoys her classes and her job. After that, she said, her outlook on life changed, and she slowly began to realize that self-worth did not require her to be perfect. --- Her mother said Bridgid surprised her by arranging to be an exchange student in Spain and staying in a foreign country without her parents for two months at age 17. Bridglid graduated from high school and came to the United States to visit When she is not busy studying, working or praying, she likes to listen to radio station KUDL and watch television shows like "The Commish" and "The Powers That Be." One of her happiest days recently was when she was maid of honor at Dana's wedding in June. But she added, "From now on I would like to see structures built with more accessibility on campus." Bridgid is scheduled to receive her degree in May 1994 and a year of study at the University. "Just standing next to her was the honor," Bridgid said. "I would look at her and see so much. I could see how beautiful she was on the inside." Dana, like Bridgid, is a KU senior aiming for an education degree. "I could be persuaded to have a third child if my husband wanted to," she said with a smile. Bridgid would like to live in Lawrence after graduation but would not mind teaching elsewhere. She hopes to get married and have one boy and one girl. Her love of children and desire to educate people about cerebral palsy and life are the driving forces in her motivation to teach. "I want to educate parents not to tell their children to look away when they see a disabled person," she said. "I think when they do that it perpetuates the problems of the way people think."
