UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN Friday, September 25, 1992 13 KANSAS VS. CALIFORNIA Tests, crowds keep several students away from Memorial Stadium on big game night Paul Kotz / KANSAN By Kristi Fogler Kansan staff writer --well he could concentrate with the game taking place so close by. Dana Zachgo, Saina sophomore, studies during the first half of the football game at Watson Library. Zachgo had to miss yesterday's game to study at Watson for a test. At 7 last night, about 45,000 Kansas fans filled Memorial Stadium ready to cheer on the Jayhawks during their game against California. Although the stadium was the place to be, many students, by choice or by circumstance, did not attend the game. At 7 p.m., Chris Bowser sat with pen in hand in 3140 Wescoe, ready to take his Biology 104 test. Bower, Tula, Okla, freshman, was one of almost 1,200 students denied the opportunity to witness the start of what was billed as one of the biggest football games in the history of the University of Kansas. "They knew this game was coming." Bowser said of the University's scheduling of the test. "It's kind of unfair that we have to take a test." "I'll be taking a test and thinking about the game and what's going on outside." he said. ...but he wasn't waving dh on dinneu. he said. Bowser said he was going directly to the game when he finished his test. , and I want to get involved," he said. "I'm a freshman, and I want to get involved," he said. Bob Hegen, assistant professor of biology, said there was nothing the University could do about the scheduling of the test. "It's a big problem with a course that has 1,200 students." Hegen said of the unfortunate scheduling conflict. "We worked it out six to eight months ago, and we can't change it." --ing. At 7 p.m. Ryan Reiter, Lyndon freshman, was studying for his calculus test on the fifth floor of Watson Library. He was disappointed he was not at the game. --ing. "You've got to make sacrifices if you want to do good in your school work," Reiter said. "I would like to be at the game. Everyone I know is at it. I might feel a little bad if they win, but it's for the greater good." At 7 p.m., Brett Butz left work and went to Benchwarmers Sports Bar and Grill, 1601 W. 23rd St., with his friend Michael Fiordiellis. Butz, Pittsburgh senior, and Fiordelisi. St. Louis senior, decided not to go to the stadium because they figured it would be to hard to park. Fiordelisi said. Even though he was not there to watch the game in person, Fiordelis said watching it on television was still excite- "I'm getting chills watching them on TV," he said. "It's weird because the Jayhawks are finally getting recognition. If people want to watch college football tonight, they have to watch us. This is the only game on." Butz said he wished he could have been at the stadium, but he was having fun watching the game on one of Benchwarmers' big-screen televisions. --been able to spend time in Lawrence since he had quit coaching here. At 7 p.m. Katie DeYoung and her sister Beth were settled into their booth at Benchwarmers, thankful they did not have to battle the crowds or the cold at the stadium. "We wanted to go to the game, but it was going to be super crowded and cold, and I wanted to see what ESPN said," said Katie DeYoung, Lawrence senior. "I feel like we missed out on some good stuff. I also feel like we missed out on the traffic and cold weather." --been able to spend time in Lawrence since he had quit coaching here. At 7 p.m., Scott Douglass, St. Louis senior, and his friends "We came to the bar early," Douglass said. "We thought there would be a lot of people here." Douglass said he did not go to the stadium to watch the game because he was afraid he would not be able to see very well. "It's still fun here," Douglass said. "We've got the best seat in the house." Patrons of Benchwarmers Sports Bar and Grill, 1601 W. 23rd $^{47}$; cheer as the Kansas football team scores a touchdown in the first half of the game. From left to right, Matt Johnson, Boulder, Colo., senior; Greg Weimholt, Dallas senator; Scott Douglass, St. Louis senator and Kristen Kister, San Diego senior. They arrived at the bar around 5 p.m. to ensure a front-row seat at the television. Announcer remembers days at KU Gottfried, from Page 1. Although Gottfried's coaching record at Kansas is 15-18.1, he helped rebuild the program. The last time the Jayhawks defeated a team ranked in the Associated Press Top 20 was under Gottfried in 1984. Kansas defeated Oklahoma 28-11. Gottfried said he left Kansas for the head coaching job at Pittsburgh in 1895 because it was close to his home in Ohio. The year after he left Kansas, the Jayhawks returned to their losing ways. The 'Hawks went 3-8 and 1-9 under Bob Valesente and then 1-10 during Mason's first year. The team went 6-5 last season, which allows for comparisons between the abilities of Mason and Gottfried to rebuild programs. But Gottfried said he would not compare himself with Mason. "I don't think it's right to compare us," Gottfried said. "But I will tell you I think it's great what he has done here." Gottfried compiled a 26-17-2 record at Pittsburgh but was fired in 1989. He was quickly called by ESPN. The network needed another color analyst because it was expanding its college football broadcasts, who works this season's Thursday and Saturday night games with his network for three years. "They gave me a call and an audition, and then they took a chance on me," he said. "I really enjoy it, but I do miss the player relationships I had when I was coaching." Returning to Lawrence on Tuesday was fun for Coftet, but it hindered his preparation for the game. Mike Patrick, who did the play-by-play in last night's game, had nothing but praise for his broadcast partner. "I usually spend from the time I get in town until the time the game starts preparing" Gottfried said. "This game was a little harder for me to prepare for and I fell a little bit behind just because there were so many people in town that called me, and so many old friends that I saw." "He is so easy to work with," Patrick said after the game. "I don't think I could ever work with anybody who could do more for you and make it more easier. He does a hell of a job. Everywhere we go people are giving him compliments, and he certainly deserves them. He's really sharp." 3 DAYS ONLY SUPER SHOE SALE 15% TO 40% OFF ALL MEN'S & WOMEN'S ATHLETIC, DRESS AND CASUAL SHOES FRIDAY,SATURDAY AND SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 25th,26th AND 27th Regular prices appearing in this ad are offering prices only.
