Televised game draws about 45,000 KU fans The Jayhawks' disappointing 27-23 loss to California last night capped a day of much-anticipated activity. The first night game at KU in more than 60 years drew about 45,000 spectators to Memorial Stadium to watch Kansas' first nationally ranked team since 1976. Hours before yesterday's game, fans gathered in the stadium, on Campanile Hill and around their TVs to view what had been billed as the biggest game of the season. Alumni gathered in the parking lot, the Marching Jayhawks performed with newly gold-plated sousaphones, and students rushed into the stadium for free with their KUIDs. It was the first appearance on ESPN for Kansas football. The Kansas-California game was part of ESPN's Thursday night college football programming. Although KU police reported a peaceful night, traffic caused minor problems as Officer Burdel Welsh had to have X-rays after his foot was run over by a vehicle. Some fans, hopeful for an Orange Bowl trip at the end of the season, threw dozens of oranges on the field before and during the game. Meanwhile, other students prepared for a biology test that was scheduled to start the same time as the game. Others, wishing to avoid traffic and cold weather, headed to local bars and restaurants. Douglas carried the ball 11 times for 40 yards and one touchdown last night against the Bears.
