Lawrence Donor Center 9-6pm Mon.-Thurs. 9-5pm Fri. 1-9pm Sat 816 W.24th 749-5750 New cable channel to blast off At 7 tonight, the countdown will read "00:00:00:00." By J.R. Clairborne Kansan staff writer At that time, those watching Sunflower Cablevision channel 36 will witness a graphic explosion, recreating the universe and signaling the launch of "The Sci-Fi Channel." Sunflower Cablevision was one of the first cable companies to commit to airing the new channel, said Dennis Knipfer, general manager of Sunflower. The cable company will provide the 24-hour channel as part of their basic cable selection with no additional cost to customers. "We thought it would be something that would be of great service to our customers," he said. "Especially with 'NASA Watch' and 'Science Fact', science fiction is always of interest to our particular demographics in Lawrence." With selections including "Dr. Who," "Planet of the Apes," and "Tales from the Darkside," the channel will serve a generous combination of both science fiction and horror genre, Knipfer said. The channel also will feature science fiction cartoons such as the animated "Star Trek" series and "Transformers," features such as "Aliens" and the "Star Trek" movie series, and movies made exclusively for the channel. The channel, created by Mitch Rubenstein of Florida, was picked up by USA Network when it was looking to acquire a new network, said Carolyn McCrory, representative for the Chicago-based network. "It sounds pretty good to me," said Garland Thompson, the Freedom Forum visiting professor of journalism. "I'll have to get another TV, mine isn't cable-ready." Thompson, who said he had always been a science fiction buff, said he learned to read just so he could read science fiction comics. He plans to watch the channel to catch up on science-fiction shows he has never seen "We thought it was a viable concept for our programming, and it would fit very nicely with the entertainment介nat of USA Network." McCrory said. Judging from comments on campus, USA is not alone with this thought. "Every time I flash by that channel it drives me crazy," Carter said. "Now that I know what it's about, I'm geeked for it." Roommates Mark Carter, Kansas City, Kan., junior, and William White, Kansas City, Mo., junior, said that with news of its arrival, they felt more connected to the team that has been broadcasting a countdown with intergalactic graphics. "Those are the shows we use to get up at six in the morning with a bowl of cereal to see," he said. James Gunn, professor of English who also teaches science fiction courses, said he was surprised to learn that the school offered a science fiction channel was starting. "I didn't think there was that much interest, but I guess the ratings show for themselves," he said. He said that seven of the ten top grossing movies of all time were science fiction movies, with "E.T." first and "Star Wars" second. "Star Wars" will be the first program shown tonight. Gunn has published over 27 books and articles since 1948. He said a recently published article in *Starlog* magazine about one of his novels had been made into a movie and television series called "The Immortal," and might also be aired on Sci-Fi at some time.
