UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN Thursday, September 24, 1992 9 Walkers to combat hunger By Tiffany Lasha Hurt Kansan staff writes Kansan staff writer Students can get some exercise and raise money to conquer hunger on Sunday. Participants in the annual CROP WALK will ask Lawrence residents to sponsor them as they walk through Lawrence neighborhoods to raise money for hungry individuals. Sponsors will donate money for each kilometer participants walk. The walk is about 10 kilometers, or six miles, and begins at 1:30 p. m. Sunday at Trinity Episcopal Church, 10th and Vermont streets. Eighty cities in Kansas and thousands more across the United States have CROP WALKs annually. Participants raised about $10,000 at last year's CROP WALK in Lawrence. Gretchen Eick, co-coordinator of the walk and Lawrence graduate student, said this year's goal was to raise $12,000. She said 75 percent of the money raised would go to 12 international relief agencies, and walkers would be able to choose which agency they would like their funds to support. Bill Wise, Lawrence graduate student, is helping to plan the walk. He said the other 25 percent of the money raised would go to LINK, Lawrence Interdenominational Nutrition Kitchen, and Emergency Services Council, two organizations that feed and assist hungry people in Lawrence. Seventeen Lawrence religious organizations, three KU scholarship halls and several campus organizations will participate in the walk. "It's a good way for someone that's new to town to get an overview of the city," Eick said. "It has been a good experience for people. I know it has been for me." Katrina Lawrence, Chanute junior, has participated in the CROP WALK for the last five years. She said the walk was a lot of fun. "We did it as a family, and I continued when it got to school," she said. "I think it's a great cause, and since I'm athletic its my way of contributing." Lawrence said walking six miles allowed people to experience a different side of life. "It helps you to realize that people have to walk that far every day for food and water," she said. Eick said water stations would be set up throughout the walk. Anyone that would like to participate in the walk can contact Eick from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., today and tomorrow, at 614 Fraser Hall. Mobile-home fire injures child and firefighter By Tiffany Lasha Hurt Kansan staff writer A fire at a Lawrence mobile home injured a small child and an 18-year veteran firefighter yesterday morning. Jim McSwain, Lawrence fire chief, said the child was taken by helicopter to the University of Kansas Medical Center. The child's name had not been released. "It does not appear to be serious burn injuries." he said. Rick Barr, Lawrence fire marshal, said the child was listed in critical condition at the Med Center last night. Firefighter Clifford Smith. 43. suf ferred a leg injury from the fire. Barr said he was admitted at Lawrence Memorial Hospital for overnight observation for a leg dislocation. The first fire unit was at the mobile home, 1800 W. 31st St., at 7:19 a.m. five minutes after the alarm went off at the fire station. Fourteen firefighters and four fire trucks were at the scene of the fire. McSwan said that when the first unit arrived, the mother and a small child were out of the trailer, but another small child was inside. Three firefighters helped to remove the child from the flaming trailer. Dwane Biggerstaff, acting captain, said the trailer's south side was engulfed in flames when they arrived at the scene. Biggerstaff said the child was unconscious when removed from the bedroom of the trailer and that the fire was under control at that time. McSwan said the fire was still under investigation but was listed as an accidental fire. There was extensive damage to the trailer. "We protect our people the best we can and we usually do a good job," he said. "I think that our units did an exemplary job getting in there, finding the victim and getting the child out. It was a good job in emergency services in the community." McSwain said nine or 10 emergency personnel were treating the child before the fire was completely out.
