WORLD Thursday, September 24, 1992 UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN Arafat: Rivals' actions hurt PLO Palestine leader says Iran, Saudis finance his foes The Associated Press TUNIS, Tunisia — Palestine Liberation Organization leader Yasser Arafat says Iran, Saudi Arabia and other Persian Gulf states are undermining the PLO by financing such rivals as terrorist Abud Nidal and Islamic fundamentalists in the Israeli-occupied territories. But neither the financing of its rivals nor the possibility of a Syrian-Iraeli peace treaty will pressure the Palestinians into a compromise that does not meet their aspirations for an independent homeland, Arafat said. Sidelined in the U.S.-sponsored peace talks and ostracized by his traditional Arab bankrollers because of his support for Iraq, Arafat has been increasingly isolated. "No stability, no security, no peace can be achieved by jumping over or bypassing Palestinians' political rights," Arafat said. the Islamic Resistance Movement. But for a leader whose political survival is in question, he appears surprisingly confident. The main challenge to the PLO's support among the 1.7 million Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza Strip is the fundamentalist Hamas, or the Islamic Resistance Movement. He said that Iranian President Hashemi Rafsanjani bluntly told him this month that Iran would support all these extremists, left and right. But Arafat said he told Rafsanjani that the PLO would not be undermined. "I told him, 'You're not the first man to try. We're a nut that's not easy to crack.'" Arafat said. He said the other main recipient of funds that once went to the PLO was Abu Nidal, who has topped the world's most-wanted lists since he split from the PLO in the early 1970s. A U.S. State Department report last year blamed Nidal and his operatives for more than 100 attacks around the world that killed 280 people. Arafat refused to give details of the financial aid he said was being channeled to his Palestinian foes. Other PLO officials said the Saudis gave Hamas $18 million this month. They said Abu Nidal had received about $40 million since the Gulf crisis erupted in August 1990. King Fahd of Saudi Arabia said no money was coming from his government. The PLO's financial woes and the lack of progress in the Palestinian-Israeli peace talks are threatening to push more and more people into the laps of extremists, PLO officials said.
