Wednesday, September 23, 1992 OPINION 5 UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Blame game should not attack innocent The hypocrisy, mediocrity and opportunism of our elected officials cannot go unchallenged. A recent manifestation of this is the sudden visibility of Vice President Dan Quayle and his conservative message. Quayle claims to be the voice of family values. Exactly what family values are is never quite spelled out. Oh, I realize that family values entail such things as appreciation for the distinction between right and wrong, love of God and country, etc. But this is to explain the unobvious by reference to the obscure. Besides the troubling implications of Quayle's recent statements (and the fact that it is doubtful that he What is more troubling is the assertion that the dominant cultural elite stand in direct opposition to these values. The elite in question, I gather, are people involved in either the news media, the arts, the entertainment business or academe. Are we to believe that every member of these institutions does not care about what is right or wrong? That by definition they are apathetic towards the well-being of their country? That spiritual matters do not concern them? To the contrary, many of them do what they do for precisely one or another of these reasons! Further, it seems to me that there are some explicit and fundamentally American values advocated by these assailed institutions; free speech, free expression, free markets, and the freedom that comes to individuals through education. Should we demonize advocates of such values? Quayle (and thus Bush) would have us do so. This is the logic of such rhetoric. himself understands them), one feel ill at ease with the fact that they are only recent. Family values are only valuable to the Republicans in an election year. Thank God for that. But this still indicates that our elected leader will say anything to stay in office. Quayle's recent visibility has nothing to do with his concern about the values of this nation. At best he is a mere puppet. At worst she shares in the hypocrisy and opportunism of those responsible for the campaign. I hope that Quayle's constituency is intelligent enough to see at least that, even if it cannot see the implications of his rhetoric. Todd Wiseman Olathe graduate student Responsible readers can find the facts As I read David Frankel's Sept. 15 column about the liberal media, I started receiving subliminal messages: First, the media are biased and unethical and contribute to dirty campaigning (Grrr! Not what I want to hear kill the messenger!) Second, the elite editors shape what we learn and report only a portion of what a candidate says. (My TV audio goes out when I turn on C-SPAN and McNeil Lehrer.) Third, gone are the days when the average person studies a candidate's stance on the issues (Whose fault is it? Their fault, their fault! If "Headline News" doesn't report it, it hasn't happened.) Wake up and smell the coffee! There is no way to get all of your news from just one article or from going" Around the World in 30 Minutes." The media aren't perfect, but most work hard to present a balanced picture. If you think one source is biased, check out another. The news is usually out there, and as individuals we have to take some responsibility for our level of awareness. Tim Brownlee Lawrence graduate student Lawrence graduate studer Column's examples are seriously flawed David Frankel is in on the hunt again. Two weeks ago, he was shooting at the media for unfairly criticizing Dan Quayle. This week, he's aiming at the media for its unfair bias against the GOP. Let's take another look. Frankel invited everyone to watch "NBC Nightly News," claiming we need to look no further to see evidence of bias. I accepted his invitation and watched. During campaign coverage that lasted about six minutes, I saw one reporter cover speeches by both presidential candidates in Salt Lake City. I saw another show how Bush was trying to keep Clinton's draft record alive as an issue. Then, I saw a report highlighting Clinton's conflicting statements regarding his draft record. Sounds pro-GOP to me. Frankel then argued that "television and newspaper people" don't always follow the same code of ethics others follow and that they let "personal values and opinions" get in the way of objective reporting. But what example did he cite to support his argument? A magazine. (Maybe someone else's personal values are getting in the way.) Fortunately for his audience, Frankel is aiming in the right direction, but perhaps he needs to shoot at a bigger and better target than NBC and Rolling Stone. Frank Bustamante nsas City, Kan.
