There were no injuries after Saturday's incident when security officers had to rush over to hold the railing in place until fans could be cleared from the affected sections. "It's pretty similar to what happened last week," Carrier Dome Manager Pat Campbell said. "The fans started screaming and yelling as anchors started to give at the base." Syracuse football players Marvin Graves, John Reagan and Brian Picucci were momentarily pinned beneath a collapsed railing and about a dozen fans during an end zone celebration during their 31-21 victory over Texas on Sept. 12. No one was injured. Moments after Ohio State capped a 35-12 victory over Syracuse on Saturday, about 40 Buckeye fans in a different section of the stadium rushed forward to high-five their team as it entered the tunnel to the visitors' locker room. The fans 'enthusiastic push toe loose a 10-foot piece of railing from its cement base. Syracuse Athletic Director Jake Couthamel said officials are concerned by the repeat of events. A structural engineer already has been consulted and officials plan to study the entire stadium, he said. "It wasn't designed for thousands of pounds of people blowing against it," he said. Crowthham said the engineer requested a change in the way the barriers are attached to the concrete. Croutham did not think the incidents should cause concern about the dome's safety. The only other incident in which a barrier broke because of fans occurred five years ago during a high school football playoff game. A soccer game between Syracuse and the University of Connecticut was played without incident on Sunday. "There's really nothing unsafe about the railings, as long as they are used for the purpose they were supposed to be used for," he said. "It's when you get riots. This is a totally abnormal situation." At 40, Jays' Winfield could become oldest to surpass 100-RBI mark The Associated Press It was early April, about an hour before game time, and Dave Winfield was relaxing in the dugout at the Sky-Dome, surveying the scene at his new home. The Yankees were in Toronto that night, and a couple of reporters who used to write about him in New York were wandering by. "They said he was too old, couldn't play anymore," Winfield said. "He was all done, they said. Couldn't do the job." Winfield could add an even more meaningful accomplishment — the only 40-year-old player ever to drive in 100 runs in one season. If Winfield waits until Oct. 3, he can do it on his He is the oldest player to hit three home runs in a game, and the oldest player to hit for the cycle. 41st birthday. Winfield and the Blue Jays, who lead the American League East, begin a three-game series in Baltimore tonight. "I don't normally dwell on the statistics. We've got a pennant race to worry about," Winfield said Sunday. "But I'll take a lot of satisfaction in getting the 100th." "The next one is special. A lot of ballplayers have had 100 RBIs in a season, but I'll be the old man on that list." Since 1900, only twice has a player 40 or older driven in as many as 90 runs. Ty Cobb had 93 RBs in 1927 at Westbrook and Evans had 94 RBs in 1987, also at 40. The oldest players with 100 RBI seasons in modern history are Babe Ruth, Honus Wagner, Ernie Banks, Tony Perez and Cobb, each did it Several other players reached 100 RBIs at age 37, including Hank Aaron, Carl Ayrstrømski, Mike Schmidt, Carl Fisker and Dwight Evans. The Blue Jays signed Winfield as a friend to a one-year contract for $26 million. at age 38. Banks' total of 106 in 1969 leads the list. winfield got his 90th RBI on Sunday in Toronto. After Baltimore, Toronto heads to New York before returning home. "The 100th will probably come on the road, which is unfortunate for the fans up here," he said. "They've been hung up there, and I would have liked to do it here." Winfield is batting .294 with 25 homers and 31 doubles. No one as old as Winfield has hit 30 home runs in a season.
