KU jazz: 'Keeps getting better' Continued from Page 7. The ensemble will appear with Gary Foster, a KU alumni and well-known studio artist who has played woodwinds on such movie soundtracks as Honeymonkey in Vegas and The Hand That Rocks the Cradle. Foster said the creation of the jazz program was unavoidable. KU's instrumental jazz program was established in 1971 by Robert Foster, director of music and dance. It now consists of three big bands and four smaller combos. The vocal jazz program was added in 1881 and consists of two ensembles. Galley estimates that 100 students are active in the program. "It had to be," he said. "If we are going to prepare students to be a part of the professional world of music we simply cannot exclude a jazz program from their experience." Galley said a main goal of the program was to offer students experience in music that is commercially viable today. The ensembles perform styles ranging from. '50% swing to fusion. Each group meets as a class for credit and is chosen by auditions, which are held at the beginning of each semester. Students need not be music majors to participate in the jazz ensembles. "Alot of people do it for recreation," Gailey said. "Some of our best players are non-majors." Brecca Proffitt, Lawrence junior, said a laid-back style along with chal- lenging music attracted her to the Jazz Singers. "They have more personality and flavor than the more traditional choirs," she said. "Every day it's a challenge. Each person has to hold their own weight and when we get it right, it sounds so cool, so hip." The jazz ensembles, particularly the more advanced ones, perform often at benefits and University-sponsored concerts. Occasionally, they play local clubs. Some individual players also do studio work or perform in their own bands. The jazz program offers students Continued from Page 7. Each spring, KU sponsors the Jayhawk Invitational Jazz Festival. Jazz vocalist Bobby McFerrin, trumpet player Clark Terry and The Four Freshmen have all appeared at the festival. "Of all the performing groups, we have the highest number of students attending," he said. "It really appeals to their generation." The popularity of jazz is increasing and the KU jazz department is coming into its own, Galey said. Foster said that KU's jazz program had already proven its worth. "Faculties are starting to get away from the conservatory approach and are recognizing jazz as a legitimate art form," he said. "Our quality is definite up and I like to see be a real asset to the whole music program." "Some of the best jazz musicians in *Kansas City and L.A.* are KU grads," he said. "I think it's a huge success by any measure. It just keeps getting better." Theater & Dance Doctoral recital: Fredric S. Scheff, tenor. 8 p.m. tomorrow at Swarthout Recital Hall.
