Quayle reasserts values Vice president continues criticism of Hollywood and 'Murphy Brown' The Associated Press WASHINGTON — Vice President. Dan Quayle sought to assure both Murphy Brown's baby and voters yesterday that he has nothing against single moms, but he called anew for Hollywood to "start reflecting basic values." Quailie joined a group of single mothers and fathers to watch the season premier of "Murphy Brown," the woman who mocked the importance of fathers." "I have the greatest respect for single mothers. They're working hard, often against great odds," Quayle said earlier in the day while campaigning in Bowling Green, Kv. Quayle and his wife Marilyn watched the show at a friend's condominium in an upper-middle-class neighborhood in the nation's capital. As Quagle stepped out of his limousine, a heckler across the street yelled, "It's not real, Dan. It's only a show." Quayle quoted Clinton, at a $1 million fund-raising event in Hollywood Wednesday, as saying, "I want Hollywood to write the future of America" prompted boos from a crowd of about 500 at the Bowling Green airport. Zora Brown, Quayle's longtime friend, said three of the men and two of the women in her living room were single parents. Quayle's peacemaking gesture to Murphy Brown's baby — a stuffed elephant and a handwritten note — got less attention than he had hoped. The gift was not opened nor his note read on CBS-TV's "This Morning" show, which featured interviews with star Candice Bergen and other cast members on the set of "Murphy Brown." Later, Quayle aides said Clinton's actual remark was, "I want you to write a new future for the United States of America. I want you to be part of the administration, not just part of the campaign." "Dear Baby Brown, I want to be one of the first to welcome you into the world," wrote Quayle. "You may not realize it yet, but you've helped start an important discussion on ways to strengthen our traditional values." Quayle assured the fictional newborn of "the respect and personal understanding I have for single mothers." In speeches in Bowling Green, Ky., and earlier at a homebuilders' convention in Lexington, Ky., Quayle depicted Democratic presidential nominee Bill Clinton as a tool of the Hollywood establishment. The hour-long show included scenes of a frazzled Brown at home with her demanding new infant, asking "What planet is he on?" when she hears Quayle criticizing her for glamorizing single motherhood. The show ends with Murphy Brown back in her studio delivering a televised rejoinder to Quayle, suggesting, "perhaps it's time for the vice president to expand his definition and recognize that whether by choice or circumstance, families come in all shapes and sizes." David Beckwith, Quayle's press secretary, called that a distortion of what Quayle said. So you think you're a Feminist...
