10 Monday, September 21, 1992 SPORTS UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN Oilers beat Chiefs 23-20 in overtime HOUSTON — Al Del Greco kicked a 39-yard field goal with 13:05 left in overtime, giving Houston a 23-20 victory yesterday over the Kansas City Chiefs. The Ours (2-1) flirted with disaster the entire game, but rallied to take a 20-13 lead late in the game. They won in overtime after Kansas City (2-1) tied the game in regulation, won the toss and Chiefs receiver J.J. Birden caught a third-down pass and then fumbled. After a 2-yard gain by Lorenzo White, Del Greco kicked his third goal of the game. Kip Chin / KANSAN Senior Shanna Cole, Kansas second baseman, tries to tag out Nebraska-Omaha's Sheila Donahue, but the umpire rules Donahue safe. Cornerback Cris Dishman caused the fumble, and defensive tackle Doug Smith recovered for the OL. Quarterback Warren Moon, who threw two interceptions, put the Oilers ahead 20-13 with a 21-yard touchdown pass to Ernest Givens with 3:15 to play in regulation. But the Chiefs came right back, tying the score with 23 seconds left in regulation on a 4-yard draw play for a touchdown by Todd McNair. McNair ran four times for 29 yards and caught three passes for 24 yards in the tying drive. The Oilers heard boos from their Astrodome fans when they fell behind 13-6 in the first half, but with 5:34 left in regulation, Moon took the Oilers 39 yards for the lead. Moon began the drive with a 9-yard pass to Curist Duncan, who pulled away from safety Charles Mincy. Three plays later, Oilman riffed a pass to Givens in the end zone for the Oilers' first lead of the game. Kansas City showed the Oilersirs fearsome ground game in the first half, but it was Dave Krieg who fired the Chiefs to the 13-6 halftime lead with his dissection of Houston's pass defense. The Oilers continued to struggle in the third quarter, but finally fought back to tie the game at 13-13 on Moon's 8-yard touchdown pass to Leonard Harris 2:21 into the fourth quarter. Houston got its chance after it stopped the Chiefs at the 2 and Nick Lowery missed a 20-vard field goal in the third quarter. Softball team wins 2 in tournament Bv David Dorsev Junior Stephani Williams of the Kansas softball team pitched a perfect game against Northern Iowa Saturday afternoon in the first game of the fall season. Kansan sportswriter The Jayhawks won 8-0 and defeated Nebraska-Omaha later after afternoon 5-1. The tournament, which also included Creighton and Wichita State, was canceled yesterday because of rain. "She struck out the first nine," Haack said. "The ball was really moving, and they just couldn't get a hit off of her." The game against Nebraska-Omaha was called after the fifth inning because of the seven-run rule. Kansas coach Kalum Haack said he was pleased with Williams' performance. "I think that gave everyone a little confidence," senior Shanna Cole said. "Stephani had lots of strikeouts, and she couldn't put the ball in play very well." Only three players from Nebraska-Omaha got a hit, and Williams recorded 12 strikeouts. Aside from Williams' performance, Haack said the team played better than he anticipated. "The thing I was pleased with the most was our hitting," he said. "Michelle Buthil, I think, was 3 for 6, and led off with a double. Shanna Cole also had two multiple-hit games. We also played really good defense in the second game." Butil, a freshman center fielder, said she was anxious playing her first college game. The first at-bat of her college career was a lead-off double. "I was very nervous," she said. "But somehow I was able to convert that playlist to it. I had a pretty hot打 game, and I would overall the team did pretty well." Williams said that Buthil's start was what the team needed. "She started out with a hit in both games, and that's what we need, a dependable lead-off hitter," she said. "I think the team did great. The difference between last year's team at this time and this year's team now is that Last year's team made it to the College World Series but lost two straight we're playing a notch ahead." Haack said he was disappointed that the tournament was canceled. The Jayhawks continue their fall season this weekend with another "Wichita State and Creighton were probably stronger teams, and I wish we could have played them," he said. "But I think we re off to a good start." Yankees pummel Kansas City 10-4 Closing in on 3,000 KANSAS CITY, Mo. — After a shaky start, rookie pitcher Bob Wickman stuck around just long enough yesterday to wind up as a winner. Don Mattingly and Roberto Kelley doubled during a late-game surge, and the New York Yankees stopped their six-game losing streak yesterday, beating Kansas City 10-4. Mattingly's two-run double started a three-run seven inning that put New York ahead 5-3. Kelly's three-run double highlighted a five-run eight inning. The Yankees hit seven doubles, tying their season high, and matching a Kansas City record for most doubles allowed. Danny Tartabill hit his 23rd home run for the Yankees. Matt Nokes had his first three-hit game since June 6, and Charlie Hayes also had three of New York's 16 hits. Wickman (4-1) gave up four runs, three in the first inning, on eight hits in 6-13 innings. Greg Cadaret relieved with a 5-4 lead, and went 2-2-3 innings for his first save. "Luckily they're scoring some runs for me," Wickman said. "After that first inning, they just said 'Wick just keep us right there and we'll get you back in the game.' I kept throwing sinker, sinker, sinker, and they kept getting ground ball, ground ball, ground ball that got through the infield. I can't do anything about that." George Brett had two hits for the Royals. He needs 11 more hits to reach 3,000. Losingpitcher Tom Gordon (6-10) had won his last five games. Nokes and Hayes hit consecutive doubles in the eighth, and Kelly's bases-loaded飞 fell for a double when center fielder Brian McRae appeared to lose in the ball in the sun. inning, Keeley Miller and Brett singled, Gregg Jefferies tripled and Wally Joyner singled. "We came out of the chute to score three runs, but Wickman threw zeros after that," Royals manager Hal McRae said. "He shut us down. He pitched better and came up with a good breaking ball. We knew he had a slider, but not that good." The Royals scored three times in the first Notes: New York had not lost more than six straight since losing eight in a row last The Associated Press Philadelphia infielder turns rare triple play - Mattingly played the 1,413rd game of his career, moving into 17th place on the Yankees' list. Brett's two hits moved him past Sam Rice into 18th place on the all-time list. **Kansas City lost the season series to New York 8-5, the first series the Royals have lost.** Morandini became the first second baseman ever to do that in a regular season game, turning the triple play in the sixth inning on a line drive by Jeff King. This was the first unassisted triple play in the majors since shortstop Ron Hansen of the Washington senators at Cleveland on July 30, 1968, and the first in the National League since shortstop Jimmy Cooney of the Chicago Cubs at Pittsburgh on May 30, 1927. with the score tied at 1, Andy Van Slyke led off the sixth inning with a single and took second on a single by Barry Bonds. The runners were going on a 3-2 run to tie up their inner up the middle that Morandain leaped to catch. PITTSBURGH — Mickey Morandini of the Phillies made the first unassisted triple play in the National League in 65 years and just the ninth in major league history — yesterday in the Philies' 3-2, 13-inning loss to Pittsburgh. Morandiin got to his feet and, with Van Slyke near- to third base, stepped on second. Morandiin then tagged Bonds, who was standing near second base, to finish off the triple play. Neither Morandini nor the other players involved had reaction on the field to the play. Morandini was met by several teammates near the dugout. The only other unassisted triple play by a second baseman in major-league history was in Game 5 of the 1920 World Series by Bill Wambsgsnss of the Cleveland Indians against the Brooklyn Dodgers on Oct. 10, 1920. There have been five unassisted triple plays in the American League, all involving the Indians. Cleveland's Joe Azue hit into the one turned by Hansen. In the National League's last unassisted triple play, Hall of Famer Paul Waner hit a line drive that Cooney caught at Pittsburgh's Forbes Field. Cooney stepped on second to double off Lloyd Waner, Paul's Hall of Famber brother, and made a tag to complete the play. A day after Cooney's unassisted triple play, Detroit first baseman Johnny Neumatch matched him at Cleveland. That finished off a period in which there was no shutout, and it was the last one until Hansen's accomplishment. All nine unassisted triple plays have come with runners on first and second. An unassisted triple play is among the rarest feats in baseball. A major leaguer has hit four home runs in a game on only nine occasions, and 11 completely perfect games have been pitched in history. Morandini had lost his starting job to Mariano Duncan, but has been playing since Duncan got hurt several weeks ago.
