SPORTS UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN Friday, September 18, 1992 9 Mason says revenge factor won't affect game at Tulsa By David Bartkoski Kansan sportswriter An unheralded Tulsa football team came to Lawrence last year and was beaten by Kansas, 23-17. The loss would be one of only two all year for the Golden Hurricane, which would go on to win the Freedom Bowl and finish No. 21 in the country with a 10-2 record. Kansas coach Glen Mason said he did not know if Tulsa, 1-1, would take advantage of the revenge factor for last year's defeat. He said the revenge factor might serve as pre-game motivation for Tula, but it should not affect the game. "Sometimes I think that stuff is overdone anyway," he said. "It all sounds good, but once the game starts, that's done." Kansas, 2-0, has beaten Oregon State and Ball State handily enough to make them want revenge for next year. The Jayhawks outscored their first two opponents by 111-30 and lead the country in scoring offense. Their defense ranks fifth in the country. Mason said that earlier this year he did not expect Tulsa to be as successful as it was last year because the team lost several talented players. But he said Tulsa coach Dave Rader and his staff deserved credit for a good start this season. their first two outings," he said. "They've been very impressive in Tulsa beat Houston in its first game and led at halftime against No. 7 Texas A&M before falling 19-9 on the road. Mason said Tulsa was doing a lot of the same things it was last year but that its offense was not moving the ball as well yet. The Golden Hurricane must make up this year for the loss of two of its best players, quarterback T.J. Rubley and tailback Chris Hugley. This year's quarterback, junior Gus Frerotte, has passed for 309 yards and two touchdowns. Senior tailback Ron Jackson, who rushed for 211 yards in the Freedom Bowl last year, has rushed for 172 yards this season. Mason said Tulsa's defense kept the Golden Hurricane in the game. "They're getting the turnovers anc, putting them in a position to win," he Senior linebacker Barry Minter, a candidate for the Butus Award for best college linebacker, is a strong player on the Tulsa defense. Minter made 12 tackles, caused a fumble and had a sack against Texas Another Tulaa linebacker, senior Chris Bratcher, made 21 tackles and had an interception against the Aggies. The Golden Hurricane boasts a solid kicking game as well. DeZolier has booted 11 pants for a 42.3-yard average, and senior place kicker Eric Lange has made seven out of his 65 starts. The team in scrimmage with 32 points Redshirt freshman punter Mark Eichloff said he looked forward to playing against Lange. "I like kicking against the best in the country," he said. "And I think he is one of the best in the country." Eichloff was named Big Eight Player of the Week last week for his efforts against Ball State. He scored 14 points in a school record 61-yard field goal. He said he was not disappointed in not getting a chance to kick a longer ball. "I made the 55 and the 61," he said. "I think I was pressing my luck for the day." Kansas junior Chris Maumalanga, who made three tackles against Ball State, said he thought Tulsa was a bad team and had a big offensive line. He added that the defense could be successful against Tulsa if it played Maumalauria said the Jayhawks had more confidence now, but he was not yet convinced about Kansas' No. 7 team. NOTES: Kansas sophomore wide receiver Greg Ballard broke his arm last week and will not play Saturday. Junior defensive end Brian Christian has a knee injury and also will not play. ■ Senior quarterback Chip Hilleary is the sixth-rated passer in the country and is ninth in total offense with 310 yards a game. Tulsa senior place kicker Eric Lange has made 19 consecutive field goals. He began the streak last year in Tulsa's fifth game against Miami. Irene Lanier / KANSAN Big Eight teams open season with fast start By David Bartkoski Kansan sportswriter In the past decade, the Big Eight Conference has lost its status as a dominant power in college football because top teams in the conference have not fared well against traditional college powerhouses. Teams such as Miami, Florida State and Washington have pinned memorable losses on Big Eight goliaths Nebraska and Oklahoma in recent years. But this year, the big guys in the Big Eight have gotten off to a fast start, putting up the best offensive numbers in the country. Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Colorado rank first through fourth respectively in scoring offense in the nation. The Jayhawks averaged 55.5 points a game in their first two contests, defeating their opponents by an average of 40.5 points a game. Kansas defeated Oregon State, 49-20, and beat Ball State, 62-10. "Am I surprised that we won by the two margins that we did?" Kansas coach Glen Mason asked. "You bet I am, because I had an opportunity to watch the film. I know some people that will probably tell you. 'Oh, Our team lost.' We were only won one game last year. 'I was so glad to get out of there with that win.' Senior wide receiver Matt Gay said he did not think Kausus could score for his team. The Jayhawks averaged 516 yards a game in total offense, ranking seventh in the country. "During spring ball, we knew we could have an explosive offense," Gay Nebraska, having defeated two small schools, leads the country in rushing offense with 444.5 yards a game and in total offense with 558 yards a game. The Sooners beat Texas Tech 34-9, and the Buffaloes stampeded Baylor 58-39. Oklahoma and Colorado have defeated formidable opponents in the NFC. The Jayhawks on the air Tomorrow Kansas football fans can watch the Jayhawks on KSMO-TV Channel 62 in Kansas City. —Kickoff is 6 p.m. from Skelly Stadium in Tulsa. —Bob Davis will do playby-play for the Jayhawk Radio Network, and Max Falkenstein will do the color analysis. —Look for the Jayhawks on ESPN next Thursday when they take on the California Golden Bears at 7 p.m. at Memorial Stadium. Irene Lanier / KANSAN Stewart ranks second in passing in the country, and Oklahoma quarterback. After Kansas' game against Ball State last Saturday, Coach Paul Schudel said Hilleary was underrated. Last week, Stewart bombarded Baylor with 409 yards passing, a school record for Colorado. Colorado quarterback Kordell Chip Hilleary, Kansas quarterback, threw for three touchdown passes and 197 yards. He completed 9 of 22. The teams' offenses may have a hard time holding on to their national scoring offense rankings as they play in the Washington, UC&C and Minnesota this week. The best teams in the Big Eight have to prove they can win big games outside of their conference before they reinstate the Big Eight as one of the premiere conferences in the country. "Ihillary is a better quarterback than "a (Clemson's Richard) Moncrief." he said. "He's a better thrower and KU has a more complex offense." Dan Eichloff, junior kicker, prepares to punt the ball during football practice. Chiefs hope to stop Oilers' run-and-shoot offense The Associated Press HOUSTON — Few teams have forced the Houston Oils' run-and-shoot offense to experiment with more success — and failure — than the Kansas City Chiefs. In 1990, the Chiefs tried to play man-to-man defense with the Oilers, and Warren Moon had his greatest statistical day as a professional. The Chiefs scored 17 goals in a game total in NFL history. The Oilers won 27-10. Chiefs coach Marty Schottenheimer isn't brag- "A lot of what people are doing against us now is what Kansas City did against us last year," Moon said. "They saw Kansas City slowed us down, and they've been doing it, too." cut Houston's production to 275 total yards, with 233 yards passing for Moon. The Oilers still won 17-7. The Chiefs will try to finally get it right Sunday in the Astrodome. Moon said he had noticed a trend in how opponents defend the run-and-shoot since year's ging about his team's defensive control in last year's game. "I don't think anybody stops it," Schottenheim said. "They always make their yardage. What you hope to do is keep the scoring down and mean to give yourself a chance to be successful." The scary part for Schottenheimer is that the 1990 loss came against a good Chiefs defense. "We don't have to look far back to what happened here in 1900," Schottenheimer said. "We're a pretty good defensive football team, and Warren had a great day that in my mind surpassed anv dav anv quarterback ever had." "They're doubling our inside guys mainly because they've been catching the majority of the ball." Defensive interest in Houston's high-tech inside receivers has caused another adjustment for the run-and-shoot. Moon is going more to his right, so the receiver can snag the NFL receiving leader with 16 catches. The Chiefs are 2-0, with victories over San Diego and Seattle. It's the first time Schottenheimer has started the season with two victories. Nebraska has chance to hand Washington first loss since 1990 The Associated Press His players aren't buving it. SEATTLE—Washington coach Don James wants to downplay the importance of tomorrow night's game between the second-ranked Huskies and No. 12 Nebraska. Playing Nintendo Bicycling. They are worried that the Cornhuskers are the best team on Washington's schedule with a chance to pin the first loss on the Huskies since Nov. 10, 1990, against UCLA. "This is our championship game," said Washington cornerback Walter Butler. "This is about as big as the game last season. For us, this is it." Free safety Shane Pahukao said Nebraska was a good opponent for the Mets. The Huskies finished 12-0 and won the USA Today-CNN coaches' national title last season after beating Michigan in the Rose Bowl. The Huskies have many reasons to be worried about the Cornhuskers. In the second game of the 1991 season, after falling behind 21-9 in the third quarter, Washington scored the 27 points to beat Nebraska 36-21. "I see this as the obstacle of the week," James said. "The next obstacle will be USC. We've got a lot of challenges coming up." A victory over Nebraska would put the Huskers in excellent position to bid for their second consecutive undefeated season. Their toughest Pacific-10 Conference games figure to be against Southern California, California and Stanford. All three will be played in Seattle. "Just because you play at home doesn't mean you're going to win," she says.
