一 CAMPAIGN'92 Thursday, September 17, 1992 9 UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN Bush aides accept invite tour Arkansas The Associated Press LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Several of President Bush's aides yesterday accepted Bill Clinton's invitation to "C'mon down" to his home state to see firsthand the economic progress made while he has been governor. But they got something short of Southern hospitality. A rowdy news conference opened a two-day tour of Arkansas by Labor Secretary Lynn Martin; Samuel Skinner, the Republican Party's general chair; and Michael Deland, chair of the Council on Environmental Quality. About 50 Clinton supporters, including several state employees and campaign workers, crashed the GOP event at the state Capitol. A top Clinton aide and a former Republican governor exchanged words afterward. "What Governor Clinton says he will do for the country and what Governor Clinton has done for Arkansas are two different things," Martin said. She cited statistics that put Arkansas at or near the bottom in state rankings on environment, crime, teacher pay and economic strength. In accepting the Democratic nomination July 16, Clinton said, "We took one of the poorest states in America and lifted it up. And so I say to all of those in this campaign season who would criticize Arkansas, 'C'mon down." Martin said, "We are not here to criticize Arkansas, but we are here to accept Governor Clinton's invitation to come on down. Governor Clinton has not lifted Arkansas. He's simply taken what he calls a poor state and kept it on a treadmill." Immediately after the news conference, Clinton campaign aide Betsey Wright moved in and began to respond. Former Republican Gov. Frank White, who beat Clinton in 1980 but has lost to him twice since, pushed himself between Wright and the lectern. "It's good to have you here, Betsey, but we didn't intend for you to have a news conference," he said. Clinton leads in poll A presidential preference poll released yesterday by the Times Mirror Center for the People and the Press showed that BC Clinton leads George Bush by 1.5 percentage points. The Sept. 10-13 poll surpassed registered voters,Margin of error was plus or minus four points. Tevis / KANSAN Source: The Associated Press Bush declines offer to debate The Associated Press WASHINGTON — A proposed presidential debate for next week was canceled yesterday after President Bush ignored a deadline for reaching an agreement on the face-off. The White House said it would negotiate only with Bill Clinton's campaign. The Commission on Presidential Debates, which had set a 10. m. deadline for Bush to accept plans for Tuesday's debate in Michigan, had hoped to work out a last-minute agreement. But Michigan State University, which was the scheduled host of the debate in East Lansing, Mich., announced that the debate was definitely off. University representative Charlie Downs said a formal announcement of the cancellation would be made later. The commission's statement setting the deadline said the panel needed time to prepare for the forum and would cancel it if Bush had not accepted by today. "I accepted, he's turned it down," said Clinton. "There are a lot of things that really need to be debated, and I think it's a shame." Marlin Fitzwater said Bush objected to the commission's plan for free-wheeling debates with a single moderator. Bush favors having a panel of journalists question the candidates — the format used in 1988. In any event, Fitzwater said the Bush campaign did not want to surrender any leverage in debate planning to a third party. "We're not debating the commission," he said. "We're debating Mr. Clinton and Mr. Gore." WEDNESDAY,SEPTEMBER23 12PM-3PM KANSAS UNIONBALLROOM FREE TO STUDENTS AND STAFF FOR MORE INFO CALL 864-4371 THE ADVISING SUPPORT CENTER Buy this.
