But this time it sounds different. "Hey — that's slower than we usually do it," Barton says. "I really like that." A few measures into the song, Sano pipes in with an improvised tenor saxophone solo, eyes closed, concentrating on the feel of the music. Rodway takes the spotlight from Sano, adding his own improvisation on the alto saxophone. "We usually end up writing all of the horn parts at practices like this." Rodway says. The band stops playing for Sides and Matthews to discuss changes on a drum solo. Rodway and Sano walk to a corner of the 10 feet by 10 feet practice room to discuss key changes, additions to their improvised solos, and adding new saxophone parts to the song. "It's not just a jam," Sano says. "We know what's going on." Rodway says the challenge of playing with another saxophonist in the band is learning to match styles and to make them work together. Swope agrees. "We learn how to listen to other players," he says. "You have to learn when not to play. There's also a lot of compromise with seven people in a band." Baghdad Jones formed in August of 1988 when Swope saw sides and Sano playing in the Lonnie Ray's Blues Jam at the Jazhauz. 926-1/2 Massachusetts St. All three were in bands that did not perform. They combined the two bands and played their first gig as Baghdad Jones in September. Then Barton joined, followed a year later by Rodway and bass guitarist David Learned. Rodway was Sano's neighbor in McCollum. Learned was in a jazz improvisation class at KU with Swope. The newest member of Baghdad Jones is drummer Paul Matthews. Called "the elder" by the band because he is the oldest member of the group, Matthews joined the band a year ago. Before Baghdad Jones, Matthews played in the band Random Aztech. The band has changed its style since 1988. Baghdad Jones's first album was recorded in 1991. It includes the band's older music, which Swete describes as a mix of funk, blues, and jazz. Swete said the band's current style is much more refined and funkier than the music on the album. "We've gotten so much tighter, we've all grown," said Swope. "The funk is coming out better. Our new drummer, Paul, is a 'funk master.'" The band is working on a new demo tape started this summer, said Swope, who handles the band's publicity and booking. He intends to send it to booking agencies and to beer companies. "If we ever get a tape in the hands of the right person, we'll be set," Swone said. All of the band members agreed that they had high hopes for the band and that they were not content with being a Lawrence-area band. Baghdad Jones will be the only Lawrence-based band to play in Saturday's River Valley Music Festival. "We want to get as big as possible," Swope said. "I know it'll give us some great K.C. exposure" Swope said. "The more we play, we can present the list of people we've played with to bar owners and they'll say, 'Hey, this band — they're serious about it. I better book them.'" Continued from Page 7.
