Continued from p. 4B Nietfeld played in his first band, *Paradox*, in Wichita he was he Since then, he has played in three bands. He played in "Fusion," a jazz-oriented rock band, during his senior year in high school in Wichita. His freshman year at college, at Kansas State University, played on the rock band, Last year, in Lawrence, Nietfeld played with the "Genericks," a classic rock trio that was together for about five months. Now he plays as much as he can solo and with friends. Nietfeld said he wanted to have a band eventually, but he was not in a rush to do so. "It's in the back of my mind. I want to get the right people together." Jimmy Yankoviz, Kansas City, Kan., senior, plays with Nietfeld at open mike nights. Yankoviz said Nietfeld was a good songwriter and had a strong voice. "He's also got a good style of guitar." Yankoviz said. "He has the ability to not let it be boring. And he is good at keeping the flow going." "Bass was what he was raised with, so he's really good at that," he said. "Chip was born with a bass in his hand." Tim Huggins, Nietfeld's roommate and Overland P. senior, also plays on the staff. "I would say his ballads are his best work right now." Hughes said. He said he thought Nietfeld's bass had a lot of technique and accents. "He can put as much feeling into the bass and guitar as he wants, whereas a lot of bass players are mundane," Huggins said. "I think there's a lot of fun in Chip that needs to be let out." Nietfeld said, "I've been getting into playing a little psychedelic stuff," Nietfeld said Mick Jagger influenced his vocals a lot. "Hisl vocal energy - it goes — it flows and goes — it dig it." He said his instrumental influences were Jimi Hendrix and David Gilmour. Now, he said, he's most interested in trying to cultivate his own style. But Nietfeld said his biggest influences have been his older brother and a music teacher he had from second grade to ninth grade. Nietfeld's brother, Craig Nietteen, plays for the Van Wilks band out of Austin, Texas, which tours with Golden Earring and ZZ Top. Nietfeld said he and Craig, who is 10 years older, have discussed forming a band when he graduates. "We could do killer harmonies to blend our voices really bleed." be said. Nietfeld said that if he had a choice between singing with an instrument or with harmonies, he would choose harmonies. He records his own harmonies on a four-track recorder. He wants to be a professional performer when he graduates. "I want to make it — I want to be a musician, that's what I want to do. So i kinda 'made a bargain with myself. I give myself till I'm about 28 or 29 to try to put my piece in the musical world." If he doesn't, he said, he's not sure what he'll do.
