St. A local rock performer is riding on the winds of fate almost every Tuesday night. At the Rock Chalk Bar, 618 W.12th St., he pours out melodies on his acoustic guitar, straining his vocal chords with songs like "Brown Sugar" by the Rolling Stones — his voice haunting of Mick and — "I'm Your Captain" by Grand Funk Railroad. His facial gestures are intense and so is his music. He plays his own songs, too. Nietfeld is one of the most popular acts in town. Chip Nietfeld, Wichita junior, stands more than 6 feet 6 inches, and that doesn't include his wild mop of brown curls. Brian VanCompernolle, manager for Johnny's太师店, 401 N. Second St., said that Nietfeld had been one of the main musicians supporting Johnny's open mike competitions every third Wednesday of the month. "He's good with his guitar and his vocals, which makes him a good solo performer. He gets the crowd going," VanCampernolle said. Nietfeld has been pleasing Lawrence crowds since last year. He draws his style from artists as diverse as Steely Dan and Jimi Hendrix. He is sometimes booked as a solo act. In open肌比赛, he plays solo and sometimes plays with friends Marty Rangel, Topeka sophomore, said that he had watched Nietfeld play at the Rock Chalk. Nietfeld said he thought his song- writing had been influenced by Paul Simon, Tom Petty, and the Beatles, especially Paul McCartney. Songwriting can be tough, Nietfeld said, because you can't write a song any time you want. He goes in and out of creative periods. "When you try too long to write a song, you end up spacing off the inertia," he said. The best songs are the ones that write themselves, he said. "The best songs are the ones that fall together — the ones that take 10 or 15 minutes to write are the ones I "The ones that I think are really from me — from my heart — are the ones that just seem to flow out. really like." he said. "That's what I want to work on — being able to keep that original thought. I've got tons of half-written songs that I've lost the original inspiration for. If you can maintain the original inspiration, you can write it down and make it mean something." The goal of good songwriting, he said, is to try to focus intently on one emotion. When he doesn't catch his own emotions, he said, he writes about things other people have felt. "Lately I've been writing quite a few tunes. I'm kind of in a creative stage." He has about 15 originals he said were probably ready to record. "If people clap for an original tune, then I feel good, then I know I've done something okay." His original tunes have won him some notice. Recently, Nietfeld was chosen by the KU chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America to be filmed for a video for Levis 501 Jeans and Denim Jackets Campus Challenge. The club challengedstudents last year to write a song about Levis. Nietfeld's song, which he wrote and performed along with George Randall, Wichita senior, was chosen by the club to be filmed for their Levis promotion. Nietfeld said he and Randall wrote the Levis song from a song he had written in Panama City, Fla., when he was vacationing there two summers ago. He was originally titled "Panama City," but now the happiest beat as "bubble ear涡." For the contest the two rewrote the song and called it "The 50 Blues." They also filmed a video in downtown Lawrence alleys. "I'm looking forward to seeing the video," Nietfeld said. "I don't know exactly how it will turn out, but I'm hoping for some good exposure." One of the best times for him to write a song is when he's driving. "I've got pieces of paper when I was writing while I was driving.
