2B Monday, November 30, 1987 / University Daily Kansan Campus/Area Concern, safety level differ in campus darkrooms By MICHAEL MERSCHEL Staff writer No two darkrooms at the University of Kansas are exactly the same. Concern about darkroom safety also varies among the people who use the rooms. The University Relations Center darkroom was labeled by Steve Cater, environmental health and safety officer, as one of the worst on campus. The cramped basement room has just enough space for sinks that hold trays of photographic chemicals. A bare metal vent pipe descends from the ceiling to just about eye level, a renovation from several years ago that was supposed to improve the flow of air. Financing for a hood that would go over the sinks was approved in last year's budget, said Robin Eversole, director of University Relations. She did not know when facilities operations would begin installing it. University Relations has taken many small measures over the years to improve airflow in the darkroom. Eversole said she hoped the new system would solve the problem for good. Steve Dick, University Relations photographer, said he was skeptical about promises for repairs. The darkroom has been inspected many times, he said, but nothing has ever come of it. He said he spent from two to 10 hours a week in the darkroom. "If I were really concerned about it, could refuse to go in there," he said. Users of other darkrooms aren't worried about darkroom conditions The division of herpetology in the Museum of Natural History uses a darkroom the size of a large closet. A ceiling vent draws air in, and forces it out a small door vent. John Simmons, collections manager for the division of herpetology, said that if the darkroom were used more than a few hours weekly, he might be concerned about ventilation "Personally, I do not have a problem working in here," he said. Students who work in larger dark rooms also said they had no problem with it. "Why should I be?" he said But more experienced workers said they were concerned. Beginning photojournalism student Steve Traynor, Ann Arbor, Mich., sophomore, said he was not concerned about spending 20 hours a week in a journalism school darkroom. Gary Mason, former head of photojournalism in the School of Journalism, said he had had health problems stemming from photographers' Mason said his problems ranged He blamed his problems on long-term exposure to chemicals. In recent years, he wore a filter mask in the darkrooms after a doctor told him to avoid exposure to chemicals as much as possible. from having a constant sore throat to coughing up blood. But Mason also blamed the ventilation system in the Photo I darkroom where he did most of his work with students. That darkroom is long and narrow and has a low ceiling. Two sinks for chemical trays run the length of the room in the center. Mason said the system there did not provide enough ventilation. Del Brinkman, vice chancellor for academic affairs and former dean of journalism, said that darkroom ventilation concerns had been raised and remedied when Stauffer-Flint Hall was remodeled in 1982. Mike Kautsch, dean of journalism, said that the school's darkrooms met all safety standards. If a strong case were made for a change, Kautsch said, the school would examine the problem. Coping with chemicals Money is tight, and renovations to some darkrooms may be a long way off. Some improvements have been made, but other darkroom workers See DARKROOM. n 6B, col. 1 PRE-HOLIDAY SAVINGS... FREE MEDIUM DRINK with purchase of any sandwich. Good only at 1618 W. 23rd.
