Lendl took home $883,200, while Cash left empty-handed. "I felt a little sympathy for him. It's hard to play like this and walk away with nothing. But we all knew it could happen." Lendl said. "When I remember Wimbledon, though, I lose my sympathy for him." Lendl, the world's No. 1 player, and Cash, the Australian who beat him in the Wimbledon final, qualified for the best-of-five final of 21-point games by outstanding stefan Edberg and John McEnroe in two days of round-robin matches. Each of the four received $250,000 to start. They played a unique for- on which money changed hands with nine aces, double faults and rally hits. Lendl, with $332,600, and Cash, with $250,600, were top finishers in the round robin and met in the final, where each ace and double fault was worth $4,000 and each rally hit $400. Also, the first game was worth $30,000; the second, $60,000; the third, $90,000; the fourth $120,000 and the fifth, $150.000. Cash, leader after the first day of round robins, started well against Lendl in the final. He won the first game handily and took $64,000 from Lendl's bank to lead $315,000 to $268,200. But Lendl, trailing early in the second game, suddenly came alive. Then he went next three, collecting $65,000 and $123,000 — and then took Cash's last $135,400. "He asked me to buy him dinner when we get to New York," Lendl said. "But he owes me $1,800. He was short that in the last game. I could only win what he had left." Sports Briefs Thomas, Jones get Big 8 honors KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Thurman Thomas, Oklahoma State's all-time leading rusher, and Oklahoma linebacker Dante Jones were named Associated Press offensive and defensive players of the year in the Big Eight Conference last week. A panel of media observers made Jones, a senior linebacker, an easy winner in the defensive category. Replacing All-American Brian Bosworth in Oklahoma's defense, Jones established himself as one of the best linebackers in Sooners history. Thomas' competition for offensive honors was stiffer. He drew eight votes from ballots returned by a panel of media experts around the Big Eight while Nebraska's junior quarterback Steve Taylor drew six. Oklahoma quarterback Jamelle Holloway, who missed the last two regular-season games with a knee injury, got one vote. Thomas, the Big Eight's offensive player of the year following his sophomore season, galloped for 293 yards last week in his finala a Oklahoma State. That gave him 1,613 for the year, which was best in the conference and No. 3 in the nation. He logged 4,847 yards in his college career. Switzer is named coach of the year KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Barry Switzer of Oklahoma, one victory away from his fourth national championship, was named Associated Press Big Eight Coach of the Year for the second season in a row last week. Switzer easily out-pulled Tom Osborne of Nebraska and Pat Jones of Oklahoma State in balloting by Big Eight area sportswriters. It is the fifth time in his 15 years at Oklahoma that Switzer has been so honored. The Sooners have gone 11-0 this season while being ranked No. 1 almost every week. NFL Football N.Y.
