8 Monday, November 30, 1987 / University Daily Kansan State/Local Students to join protest in D.C. By BRIAN BARESCH Staff writer Staff writer Eighteen University of Kansas students are planning to go to Washington D.C. on Dec. 6 to take part in a demonstration against the Soviet Union's treatment of Soviet Jews. The protest will take place at the Lincoln Memorial during Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev's visit to Washington for a summit with President Reagan. Hillel, a campus Jewish organization, is organizing the KU contingent's trip. About 100,000 people are expected to attend the rally, including almost 300 from the Kansas City area. Daveen Litwin, director of Hilile House, said that several national Jewish organizations had been planning the rally for several months in anticipation of the announcement of Gorbachev's visit. The Lawrence trip was organized principally by the students involved, she said. The Jewish Community Relations Bureau in Kansas City, Mo., has given Hillel a stipend to help pay for the trip, Litwin said. In addition to the 18 students, Litwin and Goodwin Garfield, Hillel adviser and associate professor of social welfare, will make the trip. The group will fly to Washington the morning of the demonstration and return that evening. Aaron Rittmaster, Overland Park sophomore, said the object of the demonstration was to protest to and make an impression on a Soviet leader. "It's an opportunity to make a real impact, physically make our presence known," he said. "This is the first time real active participation in front of Soviet leaders has been available." Sherry Manning, Lenena senior and Soviet Jewry Chairman for Hillel, said the protest offered a chance to show Jews in the Soviet Union that people in the United States cared about their condition. This is a human rights issue as well as a Jewish issue, she said. Litwin said that several of the local demonstrators making the trip were not Jewish but were concerned about human rights. Dana Crow, Topeka senior and Hiliel president, said the demonstration would send the Soviet Union an important message. "It shows that people in th United States care and that we aren't going to stand around and let them persecute people," she said. Crow said news of the demonstration would reach Jews in the Soviet Union through word of mouth and through letters. Make the cash flow.
