10 Tuesday, November 24, 1987 / University Daily Kansan Sports Bill Kenney to lead Chiefs in Detroit The Associated Press KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Rooteer quarterback Frank Seurer will return to the bench Thursday and veteran Bill Kenney will try to halt Kansas City's nine game losing streak, Coach Frank Gansz said Monday. The Chiefs, who have only one win and are without an offensive touchdown in 13 quarters, will be in Detroit in a traditional Thanksgiving day game. "It's a short work week. I think it's in the best interests to do all we can to get a right now." Gansz said. "There are so many (defensive) looks you have to prepare for. In a early period, you just have to go with an experienced guy. Frank has been pressing a little bit, trying to do it all." Seurer has hit 26 of 55 passes for 340 yards in his first two NFL starts. But he has also been intercepted four times and sacked nine times in the midst of a misfiring offense. Gansz indicated Seurer might return to the lineup when the Chiefs go back to a regular schedule. "Down the line, I really want Frank to play. I don't know exactly how I'm going to do it. But I think he's a great prospect, a brilliant prospect. I want him to develop and grow. What would happen, would anticipate that we happen? We need to have to do to get a win. But I want to still develop him." Gansz said. Gansz also said that defensive tackle Bill Maas and linebacker Barry Hackett could both be back from the game, according to givingday Game against Detroit. "Bill Maas and Dino Hackett are both leaders on our defense," said Gansz. "Getting them back could be an awful big help." Even though Seurer suffered five sacks and the Chiefs dropped their ball, a 23.3 setback at home to Green Bay wasasz saw progress in the offensive line. "Our line played quite well. Rushing the ball, we averaged almost 4.8 yards per carry. We had a number of sacks, but you can't put those on the offensive line." he said. "Once we could have gotten rid of the ball, once we ran a naked bootleg right into a defensive end. Another time there was a back who let a linebacker get through. I really thought the offensive line played well." he said. Gansz said his players, saddled with both the NFLs worst offense and record, may have pressed too hard at times. "I think there's a time when you just have to relax a little bit and go out and play. You play with confidence and you play with enthusiasm and you play with poise. It's easy to say. It's not so easy to do." The Chiefs were 4-1 during the exhibition season and opened with a victory over San Diego. They have not won since. "Nine consecutive weeks of not winning wears on you," Gansz said. "It's a pain in the rear end, to tell you the truth. I would like to see the kids enjoy the success of winning. I would like to see the staff feel the success of winning, the gratification, the atmosphere you have around the office for the whole week after a win. "I miss the joy of putting everything you have into something and seeing it succeed. That's what's tough." he said. Gansz said the Chiefs would work this week on avoiding penalties. They drew 11 flags against the Packers. "We're going to make every endeavor to eliminate the penalties. Things like that are improvable. So are the dropped passes. We're faring far too many paws," he said. "It goes back to feeling good about yourself and hard work is its own gratification sometimes," Gansz said. "The only way you can get out of a blue funk is to work. To work at it. This is a hard period for everybody. But nobody said it was going to be easy." Bulls rally over Celtics Jordan adds 31 points The Associated Press HARTFORD, Conn. — Michae Jordan scored 31 points, and rookie Scott Pippen scored seven of his 20 points in the final four minutes last night, rallying the Chicago Bulls over the Boston Celtics 107-102. Dennis Johnson scored 23, Danny Ainge 20 and Robert Parish and Fred Roberts each added 14 for the Celtics, 8-3, who were playing for the fourth straight game without Larry Bird, sidelined because of tendinitis. In the fourth quarter, the Bulls closed to within 91-88 on a 13-4 run with 6:44 to go as Pxson scored seven, and Jordan added four. Judge refuses to block firing of Earle Bruce Restraining order request follows lawsuit in Ohio State football controversy The Associated Press COLUMBUS, Ohio — A judge yesterday turned down a request for a temporary restraining order to block the firing of Ohio State football coach Earle Bruce as the dispute moved from the campus to the courtroom. A lawsuit filed by Columbus lawyer Phillip D. Cameron, an Ohio State graduate and a former baseball player for the Buckeyes, was the latest legal repercussion from last week's firing of Bruce after nine seasons at Ohio State. Bruce's lawyer, John Zonak, last week filed a $7.44 million suit in Franklin County Common Pleas Court against the university and President Edward Jennings. Judge William T. Gillie denied the request by Cameron, who filed suit on his own, for a preliminary injunction. A hearing on the suit was scheduled for Dec. 7 before Judge Frederick T. Williams. Cameron sought the restraining order to prevent Jennings from firing Bruce "and from continually obligating the taxpayers' funds for the retention of substitute and replacement coaches' services." Cameron didn't return telephone calls and didn't comment after the phone call. John C. Elam, acting as a special counsel for the university, said Cameron "said in a letter that he ... was a graduate of Ohio State ... and as a concerned citizen, he decided to bring the action." Elam said Cameron thought that the firing was a misuse of taxpayers' money. Bruce was fired during the second year of a three-year contract. Ohio State officials have said they would meet the terms of the remainder of the contract. Gillie's bailiff, who didn't give his name, said the preliminary injunction was denied because Ohio State coaches were paid from athletic department funds and not taxpayer money and because Bruce's contract allowed for termination. Bruce was fired Nov. 16 by Jennings, effective at the end of the current season. Ohio State beat Kentucky on Saturday in Bruce's final game. that Bruce was fired because of a clash of lifetimes with Jennings. Zenak also accused Jennings of slandering Bruce, although the university president has refused to state the reasons for Bruce's dismissal. On Saturday night, Zonak alleged Jennings and trustees Chairman Edmund Redmen said at a news conference Sunday that they stood by the decision to fire Bruce, who compiled an 81-26 record at Ohio State. "The personal attacks made against Edward Jennings and the Ohio State University by Earle Bruce and his attorney in the last 24 hours are shocking, given the leadership President Jennings has provided Ohio State during the past six years," Redman said. Spurs beat Knicks with Dawkins' help The Associated Press NEW YORK — Johnny Dawkins scored eight of his 26 points in the final three minutes as the San Antonio Spurs survived a 15-point third quarter to beat the New York Knicks 117-112 in the NBA last night. San Antonio led 105-99 with 4:55 remaining, but New York closed the gap to 106-105 on Kenny Walker's basket with 3:41 left. Dawkins responded with two consecutive baskets and added another basket and two free throws in the final minute. The Knicks got no closer than three points the rest of the way. The Knicks had a chance to tie it after stealing an inbounds pass with seven seconds remaining; but Trent Tucker missed a 3-point attempt, and Frank Brickowski hit two free throws with two seconds to go for the final margin. Walter Berry had 20 points and Greg Anderson scored 15 for the Spurs. Patrick Ewing had 21 points and rookie Mark Jackson 20 points and 15 assists, both season highs, for the Knicks. San Antonio led 74-64, equiting its biggest advantage of the game, before Ewing ignited a 19-0 spurt with three baskets, giving New York an 83-74 lead with 3:44 left in the third quarter. The Spurs, who led 70-60 at half-time, managed only 15 points in the third period.
