Valesente was offered a position as an associate athletic director, but he declined the offer. Frederick said that he made the decision Sunday night after many weeks of deliberation. See related stories p. 9 and 12. "It was not an easy decision to make," he said at a news conference. "In recent days some have said this is an academic issue or an alumni-versus-faculty issue. It was an issue of progress of the football team on the field. In the last two years there didn't been an improvement." KUAC's chairman resigns in protest By MIKE CONSIDINE Staff writer Anthony Redwood, chairman of the Kansas "university Athletic Corporation" for, the last five years, announced his intention to resign yesterday to protest the firing of football coach Bob Valesente. "It was an unprincipled decision, and I'm protesting it the only way I can." Redwood said. "I feel the integrity of the University itself is at stake. This is one aspect of the athletic program I feel I can't live with." At a news conference in Summerfield Hall, Redwood announced that he had called an emergency meeting of the KUAC board at 3 p.m. today in the Phillips Room of the Adams Alumni Center. Redwood said that his resignation would be formally announced at that time. Kansas Athletic Director Bob Friedrick said, "I respect his opinion and his decision to do so if that's what he feels like he should do. He's given six years of outstanding service to the athletic board and I appreciate In a prepared statement, Redwood said that during the past decade, Kansas football had a history of revolving coaches and a quick-fix philosophy. He said that Valesente was denied the opportunity to see his program through to success. "He should have been kept on at least for another year but preferably for the length of his contract," Redwood said. Valente's contract lasts two more years. Although KUAC by laws state that the decision to hire and fire coaches belongs to the athletic director, Redwood said that he thought the board should have been involved. Redwood said that Frederick told him of the decision at 8 p.m. Sunday. Redwood said that he phoned the KUAC board to call the meeting after a second conversation with Frederick. "I would have liked Bob Frederick or preferably have discussed it with the board last week when it was at issue." Redwood said. "If that was not possible, then at least he should have spoken to the assembled board Continued from p. 14 COACH SAYS TEAM WILL ADJUST TO RULE shooting team, I wouldn't say we're a three-point shooting team," Barry said. "I don't think we'll benefit from this rule, rule more than any other team. Barry said she agreed with Washington that the rule was unnecessary. "I think the men adopted it for more excitement and to open up the pain," she said. "I don't think that's a problem in women's basketball." and Kansas hit three of seven. But Halterman disagreed. "I haven't played any games with the rule yet. I'll have to play with it a year to see if I like it," Barry said. "Everybody may try and go get someone who can shoot the three-point shot," he said. "It might give those kids a chance to get a college scholarship if they can shoot the three-pointer." you to see it. I had Halterman said that now that rule was permanent, teams might have to adjust their recruiting plans. If a team falls behind, it won't help them catch up too often. What it will do most of the time is help people get beat worse. Games they would lose by three or four points, they'll lose by 11 or 12 points.' — Dick Halterman OSU Women's basketball coach "Without question, it will open up the inside. It has become very rugged in the lane in women's basketball the last few years." he said. Kansas center Marvin Branch is expected to make an immediate impact at the post for the Jayhawks this season. Branch was a surprise addition to the team when he chose Kansas over Pittsburgh. Shot charts were kept only for home games and selected read road games, said Jeff Cravans, assistant sports information director. It is difficult to determine how the three-point shot would have affected games last year. But shot charts kept by the University of Kansas Athletic Department give some clue as to how effective it can be. The charts indicate that Kansas would have打斗 four of 11 shots from three-point range. Opponents would have hit one of 10 shots from that range, and the other two shots chart showed that Harvard hit one of seven from three-point range Kansas' first signee during this fall's early signing period is Shannon Bloxom, a 5-10 guard from Leavenworth with a reputation as a good shooter. But Washington said she was recruiting the type of player she was recruiting. "When you have a shooter like Shannon, you have the potential that she could become our three-point shooter." Washington said. "It if a team falls behind, it won't help them catch up too often," he said. "What it will do most of the time is help people beat worries they would lose by three or four points, they'll lose by 11 or 24 points." The time to use the shot was not always when you are behind, Halterman said. Stephen Wade/Special to the KANSAN 'e time the decision was ad." Kansan Fact: 7,900 KU Students Spend Over $300 A Month!
