Frederick said that he made the decision Sunday night after many weeks of deliberation. See related stories p. 9 and 12. "It was not an easy decision to make," he said at a news conference. "In recent days some have said this is an academic issue or an alumni-versus-faculty issue. It was an issue of progress of the football team on the field. In the last two years there had been one or more." KUAC's chairman resigns in protest By MIKE CONSIDINE Staff writer Staff writer Anthony Redwood, chairman of the Kansas University Athletic Corporation for the last five years, announced his intention to resign yesterday to protest the firing of football coach Bob Valesente. "It was an unprincipled decision, and I'm protesting it the only way I can," Redwood said. "I feel the integrity of the University itself is at stake. This is one aspect of the athletic program I feel I can't live with." At a news conference in Summerfield Hall, Redwood announced that he had called an emergency meeting of the KUAC board at 3 p.m. today in the Phillips Room of the Adams Alumni Center. Redwood said that his resignation would be formally announced at that time. Kansas Athletic Director Bob Frederick said, "I respect his opinion and his decision to do so if that's what he feels like he should do. He's given In a prepared statement, Redwood said that during the past decade, Kansas football had a history of revolving coaches and a quick-fix philosophy. He said that Valesente was denied the opportunity to see his program through to success. "He should have been kept on at least for another year but preferably for the length of his contract," Redmond insane's contract lasts two more years. Redwood said that Frederick told him of the decision at 8 p.m. Sunday. Redwood said that he phoned the KUAC board to call the meeting after a second conversation with Frederick. Although KUAC by-laws state that the decision to hire and fire coaches belongs to the athletic director, Redwood said that he thought the board should have been involved. "I would have liked Bob Frederickr to preferably have discussed it with the board last week when it was at issue." Redwood said. Lisa was the top reserve for KU her freshman year and has advanced into a part time starter. Last season she was a team captain and named secondteam all-academic Big Eight. Background: Dougherty was a leader off the strong Kansas bench last season and was third in scoring with 10.3 points a game despite only three startings. She has never fouled out of a game in her 90-game career. Last season she hit double figures in 10 of KU's final 11 regular-season games. A sophomore she had the Eight on first line on the team in steals with 44 and second in assists with 65. As a freshman, she was picked as the team Newcomer-of-the-year and received the scholarship award. She was selected along with teammate Evett Otta as an alternate for the North squad for the National Sports Festival. In high school she played all-state at state. In all-Sunflower League, as a senior. As a senior she was all-area player-of-the-year and was a high school honorable mention All-American candidate. I wouldn't say No." Sandy Shaw 23 Personal: The daughter of Merrill and Shirley Shaw. Sandy was born in Topeka on November 2, 1965. She is an Education major. Foward 6-0,168,Sr. Background: She started 20 games last season after starting only in her first two years combined. She scored in double figures 13 times this season and was second on the team in rebounds per game. As a freshman she played against a subdue but masked several games with ankle and high injuries. She led the squad that year in free throw shooting with a 19-23 performance. As a freshman, she played in 20 games and started once. She was coached by Tom Rothchild at Topeka High School and then moved to Country. She was twice named to the I-70 league first team and was also named to the Topeka all-city team.
