8 Monday, November 23, 1987 / University Daily Kansan Campus/Area KU tries new plan to plug brain drain By NOEL GERDES Staff writer Personal letters, increased stipends and free campus visits are all part of the University of Kansas' newest effort to recruit the state's most wanted student — the national merit scholar. In fall 1981, 49 national merit scholarls enrolled at KU. In fall 1984, 33 enrolled, and in fall 1986, only 26 enrolled. National merit scholars are high school students who receive high scores on the PSAT and SAT college entrance exams. The decline in merit scholars at state universities was called the "brain drain" by the Wichita EagleBeacon. KU and other state universities watched Kansas national merit scholarships choose to go to college out-of-state and stay there. "We were under some pressure from the Legislature and internally," said Brenda Selman, assistant director of admissions at KU. Sally Bryant, assistant dean of educational services, said that before 1986, KU lured national merit scholars the same as it recruited other promising students. But last year, KU decided to change its tactics. KU now offers stipends of $1,300 a year, instead of $500 a year, to all merit scholars. KU also now sends brochures, stickers, catalogs and personal letters from Chancellor Gene A. Budig and invites potential merit scholars to visit the campus at no cost. The most recent visit was Nov. 13 and 14, when 12 high school students attended receptions, stayed in residence and scholarship halls and went to movies, plays and dances. The next scheduled merit scholar visit is Dec. 2 and 3. "I don't think that we're buying them or bribing them," Selman said. "We're just giving them a clear picture of what KU is." Last year, Selman and Bryant's efforts paid off, KU had 34 national merit scholars enrolled this fall, 28 of them from Kansas. Bryant said she hoped to have as many enroll next fall. But it isn't easy, especially when Kansas State University has increased its efforts, too. Larry Viterna, director of financial assistance at K-State, said national merit semifinalists there were eligible for the finalist finalists and merit finalists are eligible for $5,900. This fall, 37 national merit scholars enrolled at K-State, more than double the number of master's degrees. Bryant said that the size of K-State's national merit stipend made it difficult for KU to compete, but she added that potential scholars could win more scholarships through KU's academic merit scholarship program. "And we feel that there are many more things that a student needs to look at besides money," Bryant said.
