The Jawhacks play the Wales national team at 7 p.m. tomorrow at Allen Field House. Game against Wales may not be contest Jayhawks expected Bv ROBERT WHITMAN Staff writer When the Kansas women's basketball team plays against the Wales national team at 7 p.m. tomorrow in Allen Field House, the Jayhawks may not get the game Coach Marian Washington bargained for. The Welsh have been struggling on their U.S. tour, losing 90-30 on Monday in Ames, Iowa, to last year's Big Eight dwarf-dweller, Iowa State. "From all reports, they are not as strong as we first thought." Washington. But the Jayhawks will get the Welsh team for a bargain. Washington said that she tried to schedule the Russian national team, but Kansas would have had to guarantee them about $5,000 for coming. "Wales won't cost us much more than lodging." Washington said. Kansas assistant coach Kevin Cook attended the game in Ames. "They are not as strong as we wought they might be when you think they are strong." But Cook added that Wales' two alluest players were injured and did not play. The Jayhawks played their first international game last year against Yugoslavia, a 66-10 loss in Allen Field House. Sophomore guard Lisa Braddy said that the Yugoslavians' aggressive play taught the Jayahawks a lesson. "Yugoslavia was a lot more aggressive. Maybe we need to play a little bit more aggressive than we played against the Yugoslavians." she said The Jayhawks had a two-point halftime lead against Yugoslavia, but it slipped away in the last five minutes of the game. Kansas missed three front-ends of one-and-one free throws in the last two minutes of the game. Of the players returning to this year's team, Jackie Martin scored 12 points in the Yugoslavia game and both Liza and Lisa Dougherty did nine points. The Jayhawks hit only 39 percent of their shots from the field in that game and 52 percent from the line, both below their season averages. Junior center Deborah Richardson, a transfer from Kilgore (Texas) College, said that the game tomorrow will be her first against international competition. "I'm ready for the season to start," she said. "I don't know what to expect; whether they will be big or small, fast or slow. It will be a big surprise. I'm looking forward to see what type of ball game they run." Washington said that she did not want to reveal the Jayhawks' starting lineup. Senior forward Lisa Baker, who played sparingly because of a sprained ankle in the team's intrasquad scrimmage Tuesday in Leavenworth, practiced at full-speed yesterday. "I hope to have some good competition, but from all reports, it doesn't look like we will," Washington said. "But I'm happy that we'll finally be playing as a team." Washington said.
