Packages of the drug were found over the last two days in two successive shipments of a vessel Sadat's trip to Israel honored in broadcast that traveled between Honduras and Port Everglades. The drugs were hidden inside hollowed 4-foot-long boards resembling railroad ties. "This is the largest cocaine seizure in history," said Harry Carnes, spokesman for the U.S. Customs Service, as drug agents tore open the boards with crow-bars. Investigators open inquiry of subway fire LONDON — The government announced an inquiry yesterday into a fire that swept through London's largest subway station so quickly it trapped many commuters without warning. Thirty people were killed and about 80 injured. Investigators went into the cavernous ticketing plaza of the multi-tiered King's Cross rail and subway station to search for clues. Fans get preview of new video by 'The Boss' ASBURY PARK, N.J. — Bruce Springsteen fans gathered yesterday outside a dilapidated arena where Springsteen was working on a new music video. Garrett Giberson, deputy director of public maintenance for the city, said Springsteen's crew began shooting film Wednesday and worked through last night. City Manager Samuel Addeo said Propaganda Films of California obtained permission through the city's beach department and his office to film the video at the arcade. Meese defends North probe The Associated Press WASHINGTON — Former national security aides John Poindexter and Oliver Nierinter with seven criminal investigations when the probes threatened to expose the Reagan administration's private contra reuspplication operation, the congressional Iran-contra committee's report said. Meanwhile, Attorney General Edwin Meese III, the target of strong criticism in the panel's 690-page report, described the study yesterday as "a great job of Monday morning quarterback." "There wasn't anything particularly new," Meese said of the report, which said that he failed to keep records and that he neglected to seal North's office during a weekend inquiry in November 1986. That was the same inquiry that uncovered the diversion of funds to the contras from the secret sale of arms to Iran. North continued to shred documents throughout the weekend inquiry. The report, released Wednesday, also concluded that Meese probably approved the use of private funds for a failed 1985-86 ransom operation for U.S. hostages in Lebanon. That project was bankrolled by Texas industrialist H. Ross Perot. Defending his performance during the November 1986 inquiry, Meese said, "It looks a lot different when he is on the scene." He declined to laud the team. From The Associated Press Asked whether he might resign, Meese replied: "That's silly." The Iran-contra report provides some new details of efforts in1985 and 1986 by Poindexter, a former national security adviser to President Reagan, and fired National Security Council staffer North to monitor and in some instances to impede criminal investigations. The investigations had the potential for uncovering the NSC's role in overseeing the private contra support network at a time when U.S. military aid for the rebels had been cut off by Congress, the report said. In one instance in 1986, the NSC staff tried to persuade the Justice Department to reward Honduran Army Gen. Jose Bueso-Rosa, who had been convicted of plotting to assassinate former Honduran President Robert Suazo. Bueso-Rosa had helped arrange for bases for the contrasts, as well as logistics, training and support. "North was afraid (he) would disclose facts about the contrast," the report said. U. S. officials agreed to transfer the general to a minimum-security institution, while turning aside North's requests for leniency. NOW opposes Court nomination The Associated Press WASHINGTON — The National Organization for Women yesterday broke from the cautious approach of liberal groups toward Anthony M. Kennedy's Supreme Court nomination, vowing to oppose a nominee NOW considers "a disaster" on women's issues. Molly Yard, NOW President, told reporters that a study of a half-dozen of the appellate judge's more than 400 opinions had convinced her organization that the women in the struggle were unwilling to help women in the struggle for equality." "It is truly unacceptable to be a sexist and to sit on the Supreme Court." Yard said. Chairman Joseph R. Biden Jr., who met with Howard H. Baker Jr., White House Chief of Staff, and committee members, said the most likely timetable would be to start Feb. 2, and begin floor debate the committee would vote abou A mid-December hearing date also remained under consideration, Biden said, but the earlier start would not change the floor schedule. At the same time, the Senate Judiciary Committee appeared on the verge of setting a timetable for confirmation hearings. A broad coalition of civil rights, civil liberties and women's groups waged a successful, all-out fight against President Reagan's first nominee for the court vacancy, Robert H. Bork. But the same groups have not yet taken positions on Kennedy, urging a go-slow approach until they complete a study of his record. Yard said she hopes the other groups will soon join NOW in opposition. New pilot flight time concern of air officials The Associated Press WASHINGTON — The major airlines have been easing their hiring requirements in recent years because of the need for thousands of new pilots. This revelation has led some aviation safety officials to worry about the decline in cockpit experience. Spokesmen for the airline disputed suggestions that the two pilots' flying background was unusual, calling it the norm in the industry. They emphasized that both pilots, who were members of a small plane accident, met Federal Aviation Administration certification requirements. Pilot inexperience has been raised as a possible factor in Sunday's crash in Denver of a Continental Airlines DC-9. It was recently disclosed that both the captain and copilot had only recently begun flying that type of ietiner. But aviation experts said the overall experience level of pilots at rapidly expanding airlines, even some of the fewest experienced, had fallen off in recent years. "This is one of the areas of concern that we have today," said Homer Mouden, a former commercial pilot and vice president of the Flight Safety Foundation. "There's been such rapid expansion that (pilots) have come up with the seniority system) rapidly and the total level of experi- Senior Yearbook Portraits for the 1988 Jayhawker in 003A Jayhawker Towers Nov. 25 is the Last Day for Senior Pictures 8:30 a.m. — 5:00 p.m. (excluding weekends) Walk-ins are welcome ($3 sitting fee is paid with the purchase of a 1988 Jayhawker) For more information call 864-3728 or stop by 003A Jayhawker Towers Customer Appreciation SALE! litwin's Wide skies are for fun Dear Friends, We attribute our success at Litwin's to you, our customer.
