12 Thursday, November 19. 1987 / University Daily Kansan Campus/Area Children learn language skills at lab KU program teaches kids normal speech By JENNIFER ROWLAND Staff writer Pink noses stuck out from underneath wool stocking caps as 12 three-to five-year-olds in the Language Acquisition Program came into Haworth Hall after playtime yesterday morning. Kim Morenz, top, lead teacher for the Language Acquisition Program, plays with Andrew Johnson, 3, of Lawrence (left) and HyunYi Kang, 3, from Seoul, South Korea. At right, JoAnn Buhr, research assistant in general child language, takes data to track HyunYi's progress in learning English. The children are part of LAP, a federally financed language learning program in the department of speech-language hearing at the University of Kansas. language skills are fundamental to success later in school.' - Kim Wilcox Associate professor of speech-language-hearing "We're going to make tolem poles today. You can make a sad face or a scary face," Kim Morenz, a certified speech pathologist and lead teacher, told the class. Morenz teaches a morning and an afternoon session of LAP, one with 11 children and one with 12 children, four days a week. "I want to make a scary face," one little girl shouted. "Let me see," the girl next to her said, "Oh, that's not scary to me." she added, and she continued to scribble on her toilet paper roll. Kim Wilcox, associate professor of speech-language-hearing, and co-director of LAF, said that the class should include a focus on visual speech and language in children. "Seldom do any of us think about talking. We just do it," Wilcox said. "The same thing happens with children of bubble gum. They piece of bubble gum. So they go about getting the bubble gum in any way they can." About one third of the children in LAP are developing normally in their language ability, one third are not speaking at an age-appropriate level, and the remaining third are learning such as a second language. Wilcox said. The children in the last group are each provided with a tutor to translate for them. "One of the overriding philosophies of our program is that everybody's different — and that's OK," Wileox said. "The things that make us unique are the mix of children — those three types of groups," she added. "The more we know, the more we can develop better language skills." to success later in school, so it's very important that these children get going languagewise." Wilson added The speech-language hearing department ran the program on a trial basis for two semesters without the full staff they have now. In the fall of 1986, the department received a $350,000 grant, to be used over three years, from the U.S. Department of Education, which enabled them to expand the program. Kay Rytting's daughter, Megan who is almost five, is part of the LAP program. Megan has a language learning problem, but Rytting, a Lawrence graduate, knew how to have her daughter enrolled in the class with diverse groups of people. "Differences aren't differences anmore." she said. "It's no different than school." Jan O'Neill, whose daughter, Annie, is in the program, echoed that feeling. "I don't guess that it makes a difference. Kids learn from other kids no matter what," said O'Neill, Lawrence resident. Labrador said his family spoke Spanish at the dinner table but tried to speak English at home. He said he was not a native speaker and taught in teaching his children English. Rolando Labrador, San Salvador, El Salvador graduate student in linguistics, has four-year-old twins, Alejandro and Gabriel, in the program. "As a parent, I think it works wonders because children realize they're not the only ones who can't produce some of the sounds of the language." Labrador said.
