University Daily Kansan / Friday, November 13, 1987 Nation/World 11 Faculty stance still undecided on selective admissions plan By NOEL GERDES Staff writer Faculty Council members decided at yesterday's meeting to refuse to take a position on selective admissions before the next Board of Regents meeting. The Regents will meet Wednesday in Topeka to discuss Regents executive director Stanley Koplik's proposal on selective admissions. A motion was passed 13-10 that said, "We are unable to reach any judgement regarding selective admissions proposals until there is sufficient time to consider the implications for funding and for student enrollment." At the meeting, council members were asked to consider the results of a faculty survey on selective admissions, to which about 30 percent responded. The survey indicated that 60 percent of the respondents favored Koplik's proposal. The motion came after lengthy debate about whether selective admissions would increase or decrease enrollment, and whether to make a statement in favor of selective admissions conditional on a change in KU's enrollment-driven state financing. Enrollment-driven financing means that the amount of money KU receives from the state is tied to how many students enroll. If enrollment decreases, KU loses state money. Sid Shapiro, professor of law, said "The risk is that no matter how careful our language is, no matter how we intended to qualify that language, if the faculty now says that they're in favor of selective admissions, the risk is that the politicians will give it to us, and not necessarily give it to us in the way that we have asked."
