8 Friday, November 13, 1987 / University Daily Kansan Campus/Area Sci-fi writer will sign books Dan Ruettimann/KANSAN Graduate teaching assistant Ned Huston had a short story printed in the science-fiction anthology, "Universe 17." By KIRK ADAMS Staff writer Staff writer A KU teaching assistant is having a book-signing today to celebrate his first published science-fiction story. The story, called "Pliny's Commentaries," by Ned Huston, was published in June in the science-fiction anthology, "Universe 17," edited by Terry Carr. "Universe 17" is part of a series of science-fiction anthologies. Huston, a teaching assistant in English, will sign copies of the book today from noon to 1 p.m. in the Oread Bookstore in the Kansas Union. The story is a humorous twist on a favorite subject of science-fiction writers. It is set in the far future and is about a robot who tells nother robot about the humans that used to live on Earth and why they left. According to the story, humans left Earth in search of a better place to live. What makes the story different is the way it is written. Huston said that robot stories he had read depicted robots that thought human beings were alive. "I wanted to depict the point of view of a robot that was intelligent, but that was different from a human robot," she said. "I also told the story in a style that a robot might use." Huston said. So, the story is written like a computer program. Huston wrote the first draft of the story in 1982. He tried to sell it a couple of times, was rejected and then let the story sit for about three In 1985, he started trying to sell the story again. "I decided there must be something wrong with anyone that didn't like this story, so I made some minor changes and started submitting it again." This time, Doubleday publishers bought the story. --services • Birth control • Tubal ligation • Gyn exams - Testing and treatment for sexually transmitted diseases.
