10 Tuesday, November 10, 1987 / University Daily Kansan Sports Newson Continued from p. 7 get into the Navy Special Warfare School, and he wondered if he was taking on too heavy of a class load. To get into the Special Warfare school, Newson said he knew he would have to be at his physical and mental best. The first four weeks of the school are devoted solely to physical conditioning, which tends to weed out the trainees that aren't prepared for the physical rigors of the school. After making it through the preliminary physical part of the school, the remaining people go through combat training, map drawing, study of demolition and explosives, scuba training and jumpo school. Navy Lieutenant Robert O'Neil counselled Newson and said he was confident that Newson could handle all of his responsibilities. "Rob has been a model student throughout his three years in the program," he said. "One of the things that we stress is that we want our members to take part of activities outside the (ROTC) unit. He can handle other committees and still perform well in ROTC activities." Interaction with the other members of the Naval ROTC program was something that Newson said he sometimes missed out on in his first three years. Like everything else, though, Newson said he began to feel more comfortable with his hectic lifestyle and grew to be more a part of the unit. "It hurts me because in ROTC is a kind of camaraderie that goes along with being part of the unit," he said. "I'm not involved in as many of the activities as I would like to be. That was really tough on me at first, but I think people understand now that I sometimes have other commitments." Sports Briefs Page's ankle to be repaired Kansas freshman cornerback Michael Page will undergo surgery Wednesday on the ankle he injured in the Oklahoma game. The ankle has two torn ligaments and Page's fibula, the outer and smaller of two bones of the leg, is also fractured. Page will miss the rest of the season. The 6-foot, 185-pound Omaha native recorded six tackles and started in three games for the Jayhawks. Correction Rich Rachel was misidentified in a photograph in yesterday's Kansan. Rachel was a defensive back coach at Kansas from 1979 to 1982 and is now the inside linebacker coach at Kansas State.
