10 Monday, November 9, 1987 / University Daily Kansan Sports Soccer team beats Kansas State By ROBERT WHITMAN Staff writer The Kansas men's soccer team completed an unbeaten weekend yesterday against two of its fiercest rivals. The Jayhawks tied Missouri 1-1 Saturday in Columbia, Mo. Kansas midfielder Ed Nelson stretches in front of a Kansas State player. KU won the match 2-1 at Memorial Stadium v戴廷威. Forward Tom Holland scored a goal in the first half yesterday to give Kansas a 2-1 victory over Kansas State at Memorial Stadium. Holland scored his goal against K-State off a corner kick by forward Ron Bone, shooting with his right foot before the pass touched the ground. Kansas, 9-4, had taken a 1-0 lead on a goal by forward Keith Paton, who took a pass from the right wing to the Wildcat goalie to the left post. About three minutes later, the Wildcats tied the game when their throw in deflected off Kansas defender Alan Neighbors and into the Kansas goal. In the second half, K-State was awarded a penalty kick when Neighbors was called for pushing in the penalty box. But the penalty kick sailed over the crossbar. Kansas had a chance to increase its lead later in the half when Blue sent a corner kick to Ed Nelson about 10 feet in front of the Wildcat goal. Nelson's header hit the inside of the right post and deflected away. "We could have put a few more goals in, but I think the game yesterday took a lot out of us," Kansas coach Gleen Shirtlife said. took Missouri to two scorele 10- minute overtimes with the score tied 1-1 after 90 minutes of regulation play. The Jayhaws tied Oklahoma State 1-1 Saturday in Stillwater, Okla., and lost 3-0 yesterday to under-19 select team, in Tulsa, Okla. Sports Briefs In the first half against Oklahoma State, Kansas coach Kevin Connor said, the Jayhawks had a strong wind to their back and dominated play. Leigh Strom scored the Kansas goal, tipping in a shot from Kansas forward Karyn Moylan that had deflected off the hands of the Cowboy goalie. "It's not a bad result." Connor said. "Oklahoma State is the Big Eight champion. I think this game will give us a lot of confidence against them this spring." Oklahoma State, which had the wind in the second half, tied the game, floating a shot from 25 yards over the head of Kansas goale Bett Warfield. The Jayhawks were scheduled Sunday to play Essex, another under-19 select team in Tulsa, but Essex backed out and was replaced by Sheffield. Sheffield scored in the first five minutes of the game and in the last two minutes of the first half. Connor said forward Kristin Wolfe had an open field five feet in front of the goal in the first half, but shot wide. KU women bowlers take fifth in tourney The KU women's bowling team placed fifth out of a 12 team field in the Mid-States Intercollegiate Conference tournament this weekend in Kansas City, Mo. Kansas coach Michael Fine said the women's team had its best showing of the year by far in the tournament, which included teams from Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Colorado and Texas. Wichita State won the women and men's competitions in the tournament. Fine said he was especially pleased with the finish of the women's team because it played in the tougher of two divisions and had defeated two of the four teams that finished ahead of them in the final standings. The top performers for the Jay- hawk wives were Amy Gent with a 177 average, Joe Lidyberger, 173. Debbie Wilker, 173. Debbie McKenzie, 160. Karol, 160. and Amy Dillon, 152. The KU men's team finished tenth out of 12 teams in the same tournament. Fine said. Top performers for the men's team were Tim DeMars, with a 204 average; John Percival, 197; Christine Bock, 192; and Morris Ross, 184. KU Crew wins race places 4th in another The KU Crew won one race and placed fourth in another in the Head of the Chattahoochee Regatta on Saturday in Atlanta. In a tournament featuring teams from more than 40 schools, the Crew placed first out of 14 teams in the club four race. Members of the club four team were Eddie Duncan, Tim Sites, Mike Kennedy, Larry Carlson and coxswain兰妮 Wickham. The KU men's open four team of Geoff Rosser, Dave Wakefield, Andy Leonard, Peter Harre and Joan Benton placed fourth out of 17 teams.
