14 Friday, November 6; 1987 / University Daily Kansan Sports Crew heads south to face top teams By PHIL WILKF Special to the Kansan The KU Crew is heading south for its last race of the year. Men's coach Cliff Elliott and two boats are heading to Atlanta to compete in the Head of the Chattahoochee Regatta. Elliott's two varsity boats, a men's open four and a men's club four, will row tomorrow. This is the first time the crew has competed in this race. "This race has more consistent competition than other races in the south," Elliott said. "Many of the top crews in the country will be there." Crews from Georgetown, the Coast Guard Acadamy and Florida Institute of Technology will be among 30 to 40 other programs expected to competed. "It's always exciting to experience that caliber of competition," said Peter Harre, North Barrington, III., senior. "Teams like Florida have an advantage in the spring, because they can row all winter, but I feel we're pretty even right now." Harre will be rowing in the open four race. Although he usually rows in eight man boats, Harre said that he would rather row another two weeks in Omaha, Neb. Many of these crews will be at the Dad Vail regatta (in Philadelphia) next April," Elliott said. "This race will give us a good estimate of where we stand. It might help us in the seedings for the Dad Vail." "I rowed at Dad Vail last May. I expect the competition in this race (in Atlanta) to be similar," Harre said. This will be the fourth major race of the year for the KU crew. Elliott has taken crews to head races in Boston and Des Moines and to a sprint race in Omaha. This is the first time in three years the crew has competed in fall races, Elliott said. A head race differs from a sprint race. In a head race, crews race for three miles against the clock rather than competing directly against other boats. Most sprint races are 200 meters long. While two boats will be racing in Atlanta, the rest of the crew will finish their season on the Kansas River. Class day intrasquad races will be held tomorrow. There will be four races starting at 1 p.m. The launch area and finish line will be the Eighth Street boat ramp in North Lawrence. These races will be 1000 meters long, Elliott said. The public is invited. The trial of Sherrell Burgess. 24, went to the jury in Franklin County District Court after the morning session on the second day of court proceedings. She and three others were charged with aiding and abetting second-degree murder. Burgess testified that she saw Michael L. Hicks, 36, of rural Wellsville, stab Wills. Her testimony echoed that Wednesday of her husband, Donald Burgess, 39, who is also charged in the case. The fourth person charged with aiding and abetting in the Wills death, Charles E. Tevis, 34, of Bondale, testified yesterday that an argument about a month earlier apparently led to Wills' slaying. No one has been charged with murder in the death of Wills, 29, who played basketball at K-State from 1978-80. He was stabbed in the abdomen and chest a short time after he entered an Ottawa lounge early on the morning of July 25. Tevis, Hicks and Donald Burgess are to stand trial later. Sherrell Burgess testified Thursday that she did not take part in the fight at the lounge and claimed she saw Hicks stab Wills with a knife that was five or six inches long. "I noticed Mr. Hicks had something in his hand, but I didn't know what it was (at the time)." she said. "He made like a punch . . he put the object in his pocket, and I noticed it was a knife." Prosecuting Attorney Wendell Barker asked her about a statement she had given a detective a few hours after Wills's death, in which she said she stabbed Wills to protect her husband from getting beaten by the victim.
