Admissions plan supported in poll

Almost 60 percent of KU faculty members support a selective admissions proposal by Board of Regents executive director Stanley Koplik, according to a survey released yesterday by the University Senate Executive Committee.

SenEx sent about 1,175 forms to faculty members Oct. 23, asking them whether they supported the proposal on selective admissions with few or minor reservations, whether they supported the concept of selective admissions but did not like Koplik's proposal and whether they supported the current open admissions policy.
Koplik's proposal would require in-state students to complete a recommended high school curriculum with a grade point average of 2.0 or higher, a score 23 or higher on the ACT composite or rank in the top third of their graduating class to be admitted to the University of Kansas.
Under the current policy, any student who graduates from an accredited Kansas high school automatically is admitted to KU.
About 366, or 31 percent, of the forms were returned

The Sante Fe Railroad Station connected Lawrence, Topeka and Kansas City by 1872.
This windmill stood on the site of the abandoned Theta Chi fraternity house Ninth and Emery Roads.
The mill was used to grind corn, wheat and rye and competed against other steam-powered mills in the city.
In 1941, the Lawrence Journal- World reported that the mill's stone foundation could still be seen. In 1959, the Theta Chi fraternity bought the land, and when digging began for the construction of their house, the mill's cistern, tool shop and some equipment was unearthed.
Evelyn Swartz, SenEx chairman, said she wasn't surprised that most faculty supported selective admissions in the survey. She said she thought the comments were the most interesting part of the survey.
The windmill burned on April 30, 1905 on a Sunday afternoon. Smoking is thought to be the cause of the blaze.

Another building destroyed during Querrill's raid was the Eldridge House, which had been constructed from the old Free-
Quantrill's men attacked the Eldridge House, shooting its tenants and burning the building. Quantrill left town, but two of his men stayed and went to the City Hotel, where the proprietor, Nathan Stone, went outside to demand that the shooting stop and was killed.
George Collamore was awakened by the raiders at his twostory stone house at 646 Louisiana St. Collamore and Pat Keele, who had been staying at Collamore's house, hid in a well behind the house while the raiders burned it. Collamore, Keefe and J.G. Lowe, who tried to rescue the men, suffocated in the well. In all at least 17 Union soldiers and several citizens were killed, 25 persons were wounded, about a hundred homes and most of Lawrence's
business district were destroyed.
Another important mill in Lawrence was the Pierson Roller Mills, a flour mill, which was located in the 600 block of Massachusetts Street. The mill was built in 1882 by S.B. Pierson and was once more prosperous than the Bowersock Mill. The mill had a storage capacity of 60,000 bushels. It was destroyed by fire in 1900.
During the late 19th century the railroad was one of the most important aspects to a city's economy. Without freight, there were no supplies and no outside market. The Santa Fe Railroad Station connected Lawrence and Topeka in 1868 and connected Lawrence and Kansas City in 1872. Its steel rails guided the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe railroads. The depot at New Jersey and Seventh streets was torn down in 1955.

Old North College, the predecessor of the University of Kansas, was 50 feet square and three stories high. The building was designed by Ferdinand Fuller, who is credited with naming Mount Oread. The University opened September 12, 1866. The first year there were about 55 students. Next year there were about 100. Later, the main campus was relocated with the construction of what was called the "New Building," later officially named "University Hall."
"Funding is clearly on people's minds," Swartz said.
The four-story stone building was 100 feet wide and 300 feet high and cost about $139,000. The building, which was renamed Fraser Hall in 1897, was demolished and replaced in 1965 with "New Fraser," the building that stands on campus today.
Lawrence's history is inseparable from its buildings. Many of the buildings have been lost to the pounding of a wrecking ball, or perhaps a cigarette butt. The Lawrence windmill's monstrous blades will never turn over the city again, nor will any person ever walk the halls of Old Fraser Hall, or cheer for dancers at the Bowersock Opera House. But as long as there are books and memories and pictures of these events, our city's history will never fade away. •
She said many faculty members would support selective admissions if they thought the state might change the way it allocated money to KU.
Under the present system, the amount of money KU receives from the state depends on the number of students enrolled. Thus, under the current system, if KU admitted fewer students because of selective admissions, it would receive less money.
Wick said that the survey results would be discussed at the Nov. 12 University Council meeting and that Judith Ramaley, executive vice chancellor, mght include the results in a report on selective admissions to the Regents.
The Regents will consider Kopikl's proposal at his Nov. 19 meeting.

When a disabled student needs a space. Parking Services usually will reserve the space early in the school year, Turvey said.
"All a student has to do is ask for one, and usually it appears pretty quickly," Turvey said. "I can't imagine somebody being here since the beginning of the year without student assistance finding out he needs a space."
Templin has no spaces for disabled students because no students with disabilities live at the hall, Turvey said. Turvey said Parking Services reserved parking spaces for the disabled at a hall only when a student with disabilities lived there. The number of reserved parking spaces would be the same as the number of disabled students living in the hall, he said.
He said that since the University had begun installing spaces for disabled students in 1977 no student would have been permitted that a disabled space be reserved.
"The spirit of the law is that there be a spot that gives students with disabilities easy access to the building," Turvey said. "As far as I know, the University does have parking for all students with disabilities."
Turvey said that disabled students with state handicapped permits who visited Templin could park in the back entrance of the hall without receiving tickets.
Petty, who is disabled, said he had received several parking tickets at KU. But, he said, he never had to pay any of the tickets because he successfully appealed them to Parking Services.
