Some residents estimated that up to 500 people were missing in the scores of buried shacks. At least seven of the children killed were attending first Holy Communion parties when they were buried under the landslide Sunday in Villa Tina, an impoverished area of the industrial city of Medellin. Exhausted workers dug through 20 feet of mud looking for survivors and bodies, and residents missed relatives and belongings. "We heard the noise that sounded like an explosion, and soon afterward a huge mass of rocks and mud descended upon us," said Mary Mosquera, who lost three daughters in the avalanche.
