University Daily Kansan / Wednesday, September 9, 1987 7 Campus/Area Menninger Clinic converted to inn By NOEL GERDES Staff writer Esther Wolfe already has one reservation for the new bed and breakfast inn she and her partner are constructing in Topeka, and it isn't even finished yet. Wolfe, Lawrence graduate student, and Gail Towle, Topeka resident, plan to convert the original Mennonnie Clinic into a 14-bedroom bed and breakfast inn, the only one of its kind in Topeka. They now own and operate Lawrence's only bed and breakout room, Halcyon House, at 1000 Ohio Street. Wolfe said that the new inm would be named the Heritage House, and that it would open for business in the middle of May. The one reservation the new inm has taken was the result of an overflow of reservations from Halcyon House for KU graduation, she said. "I think people like to stay in bed and breakfasts because they are more laid back and more intimate than large hotels," she said. She said that although bed and breakfasts were popular in Europe and on both coasts of the United States, she didn't really caught on in the Midwest. "We've had a lot of people come to consult with us, though, so I think the interest is there," she said. Terry Marmet, preservation architect for the Kansas State Historical Society in Topeka, said the state was overseeing renovations made in the original Menninger Clinic building because it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The building has historical significance because the Menninger family were pioneers in the treatment of mental disorders in the United States. The Topea clinic was the first clinic the Menninger family opened in the country. "Any changes have to convey an association with the time period," Marmet said. Things like wooden siding, leaded glass windows, porches, fireplaces and room layout, and paneling in Karl Menninger's office will have to remain, he said. Marmet said the building was originally a farmhouse built around the turn of the century. In 1925, the Meninger Sanitarium Corp. bought the house and converted it into an 11-bed psychiatric hospital. During the 1930s it became an office building for the Meninger doctors. Wolfe said that the building had been vacant since 1984, and that vandals had damaged it considerably. Most of the renovation, such as installing a kitchen, will be completed by December, she said. The inn will not open until May because if things go as planned, Heritage House will be the site of the 1987 Designers' Showhouse, which starts April 23 and ends May 15. Designers' Showhouse is an annual fund-raiser for the Everywoman's Resource Center in Topeka, said Marilyn Ward, executive director of the center. Interior designers volunteer to decorate a room in the house for free, and then visitors are charged admission to view the house. The center is a non-profit organization that provides information and referrals about child care.
