14 Friday, September 4; 1987 / University Daily Kansan Sports Volleyball team to face tough schedule By ROBERT WHITMAN Staff writer Just before practice yesterday, volleyball coach Frankie Albatz sit in her office in Allen Field House reviewing a videotape of last season's match against Southwest Missouri State. "I think that was our worst match of the year. They seem to bring out the worst in us," Albitz said, as she switched off the video recorder. If that's true, the Jayhawks may have a rough beginning to their weekend tonight when they play their first match in the Southwest Missouri State tournament in Springfield, Mo. Kansas will play Southwest Missouri State at 8 p.m. today in the first of three matches in the four-team, round-robin tournament. The Jayhawks finish play tomorrow with two matches, one against Memphis State at 1 a.m. and one against Texas at 8 p.m. The tournament is part of Albiz't attempt to play the toughest competition possible to prepare for the Big Conference tournament Nov. 20-22. Texas made the semifinals of the NCAA tournament last season. Southwest Missouri State defeated the Jayhawks in three straight games last season at the tournament. Albitz said her goals for the team were to make the finals of the Big Eight tournament, win 50 percent of the matches against non-conference teams and 75 percent of the conference matches. "I'm giving up a big win-loss record to get a better conference record." she said. Dan Ruettimann/KANSAN But Albitz said she wasn't saying the team couldn't do even better. "They may prove me wrong. These kids are amazing at times." Albitz Shannon Ridgeway is one of the seniors who will lead the KU volleyball team at their first tournament this weekend in Springfield, Mo. said. Kansas plays a more defensive style of volleyball than most of its opponents. Since most of the successful teams in the country have strong offensive sides, Albitz said the Jayhawks would have to play with a lot of heart to succeed. Kansas has only one player who is at least 6 feet, senior outside hitter Judy Desch, who is right at the 6-foot mark. We're a little bit smaller, but we're a little bit quicker." Albiz said. "Since we're a little smaller, we could have a little trouble at the net." Kansas's best hitter from last season, Catalina Suarez, transferred to the University of Missouri at Kansas and will be a big chore, but Suarez was an all-around player, not just a hitter, Albiz said. For example, one of the ways Albitz has tried to compensate for the loss of Suarez, Albitz said, is to change the way the team receives serves. Since Suarez was a skilled service receiver, Kansas used a twoman serve receive alignment. Albizt said she wanted to use three-and four-man alignments, but the players wanted to stay with the two-man alignment. Just before yesterday's practice, Albizit said she would rely on Desch, 5-foot-9-inch senior Shannon Ridgeway and 5-11 senior Tammy Hill for offensive punch. Monica Spencer, 5-8 senior and Big-Alg Eight honorable mention selection last week. She will mention selectionelle Klone, 5-9 senior, would also start along with outside hitter Eileen Schwartz, 5-7 senior. Even without Suarez, Spencer, who had almost 84 percent of the team's sets last year, said the team's outside would do the hard work to get their spikes down to the floor. "Cat did get more kills, but I have just as much faith in our hitters as I had in her," Spencer said. Spencer said the team was eager to get into its first match with all the preseason practice they've gone through. - fashion cuts...regularly $8 $6 with KUID $26 with KUID -perms...regularly $40 walk-ins welcome for cuts appointmentss necessary for perms or coloring M-F 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sat. 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. 1000 Massachusetts 843-9009 Godfather's Pizza welcomes the Students at K.U.
