University Daily Kansan / Friday, September 4, 1987 Campus/Area 11 City schools starting soon Children, parents again stocking up on school supplies By BRIAN BARESCH Staff writer Time for pencils, time for books, time for teachers' dirty looks for Lawrence schoolchildren Class doesn't begin until Tuesday morning, but the kids and their parents are already planning ahead, enrolling and tracking down supplies. Patty Breedlove, who will start the second grade at Broken Arrow Elementary School, 2704 Louisiana St., wasn't exactly looking forward to school yesterday as she and her mother, Jean, of Lawrence, hunted for the required water colors, modeling clay and bottles of glue. What was school like last year? "Mostly boring things," Patty said. It wasn't all drudgery, though. We learned about the moon, and Saturn and all the other planets," she recalled. Her favorite part of school, though, is gym. "We play with hoops, and swing on ropes, and do log rolls," she said. Patty had to be prompted; like many youngsters at the end of summer, she would rather not think about school at all. Along with scissors, crayons and modeling clay, the required items for Lawrence elementary schools include water colors, markers, rulers, glue, pencils, writing tablets and a box to carry it all in.
