"You know when you go to local businesses, the money is staying in the community," said Gravenstein, a senior from Topeka. Based on this year's Top of the Hill list, she isn't alone. Winners in 24 of the 35 categories, which range from restaurants to tanning salons, are locally owned businesses. Susan Henderson, the director and marketing manager for the Lawrence Convention and Visitor's Bureau, said the results are reflective of the good pool of local businesses that Lawrence has to offer. "We are lucky here in that we have a really vibrant downtown," Henderson said. Gravenstein, who commutes from Topeka, said that Lawrence has a better selection of local businesses than her hometown.
